Grants to Chicago, Illinois Agencies and Nonprofits for
Environmental Education and Protection Activities

GrantWatch ID#: 174785
Agency Type:

Foundation / Corporation

The Lumpkin Family Foundation

Grants typically ranging from $5,000 to $25,000 to Chicago, Illinois nonprofit organizations and governmental agencies for programs and projects that focus on environmental education, protection, and preservation. Letters of Inquiry are due by October 21. The Foundation is specifically interested in funding proposals that:

- Support opportunities for children in and out of school to (a) engage physically with, and learn about, the natural world, (b) to eat well, and (c) to make the most of their innate sense of justice and caring for others and the planet.
- Encourage collaboration among organizations and people working on matters related to environmental sustainability and climate change.
- Support the development of a healthy, local food system.
- Preserve and protect important natural places in the Chicago region.

Grants vary in size depending on an organization’s size, the project, and the need. Typically, grants range from $5,000 to $25,000.

While not typical, the Foundation has made a few multi-year gifts. If you have a specific project that might require multi-year funding, please contact the Foundation to discuss your request.

Proposals will be considered from eligible 501(c)(3) organizations and municipalities that meet the following criteria:

- Reflect The Lumpkin Family Foundation's mission of supporting people pursuing innovation and long-lasting improvements in the environment.
- Serve the community without discrimination on the basis of race, gender, or religion.
- Keep books available for regular independent outside audit, and make results available to all potential contributors.
- Comply with applicable laws regarding registration and reporting.

Proposals will not be considered from:

- Organizations that are not exempt under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Service Code.
- Organizations whose primary purpose is to influence legislation.
- Political causes, candidate’s organizations or campaigns.
- Individuals.
- Religious organizations, unless the particular program will benefit a large portion of the community and does not duplicate the work of other agencies in the community. Organizations that do not meet general and program eligibility guidelines are strongly discouraged from applying for a grant.

Application Process:

Applications are submitted online. The first step is the submission of a Letter of Inquiry (LOI). Your LOI will be reviewed by the Committee responsible for that grant program to determine whether the proposed effort fits sufficiently within the Mission and Program Goals to merit further review. If so, the Foundation will invite you to submit a full application. Once the Foundation receives the full application, they might call to schedule a site visit. The Committee evaluates applications based again on relevance to Program Goals and its annual budget. Committees are comprised of family members and community leaders.

2016 Fall Cycle:

Letters of Inquiry accepted until October 21st (not before October 3rd);
Applications invited by November 11th;
Applications due December 5th;
Grant decisions made by December 23rd.
