Grants of up to $75,000 will be awarded for community-based programs that provide for the health and welfare of Alabama's children and for the strengthening of their families. Funds will be awarded to programs that have as their primary purpose the prevention of child neglect and abuse. Funds can be utilized for primary prevention measures on the community level including educational programs, parental support classes, and media awareness campaigns or for secondary prevention measures which offer supportive services for populations at-risk due to their life situation such as support programs for families and family members with identified stresses. Programs should utilize community resources, collaborate among existing prevention programs and use community volunteers.

Eligible Programs/Services:
1. Parenting Education and Support Programs
2. Home Visiting Programs
3. Public Awareness and Training Programs
4. Respite Care Programs
5. School-Based Programs
6. After-School/Non-School Based Programs such as Boys and Girls Clubs, YMCA, YWCA, etc., Faith-Based Organizations, Community Centers, Schools
7. Mentoring Programs for adolescents to age 19

Ineligible Programs/Services:
1. Economic approaches to prevention (i.e., child support, divorce equity, or income maintenance programs);
2. Domestic violence (spouse abuse) prevention or shelter-based treatment programs;
3. Crime prevention programs;
4. Teen pregnancy prevention programs;
5. Drug, alcohol or other substance abuse prevention or treatment programs;
6. Communicable disease prevention programs;
7. Stranger Awareness Programs;
8. Boot Camps;
9. Tertiary Prevention Programs;
10. Suicide Prevention Programs;
11. Tutoring;
12. Character Education;

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

Cash and in-kind match of 50% required of all applicants. A minimum of one half of the required match must be in cash.
