Funding is available for local nonprofits and for-profit agencies that provide a complete range of child development services for economically disadvantaged families and their children. Funding is to be used to support services that help preschool children develop the early reading and math skills they need to be successful in school.

These services will help children from economically disadvantaged families develop the social, cognitive, and emotional skills they need to succeed in life. The purpose of this grant is to provide for the continuation of Head Start services as provided by the former grantee, Community Council of Southwest Texas, Inc. The former grantee was funded for a total enrollment of 68 infants, toddlers, and their families. For this funding opportunity, each program must assure that at least 10 percent of the total number of children served are children with disabilities. A grantee may provide part-day, center- or home-based, programs for eight or nine months a year. Alternatively, a grantee also has the option of providing full-day, full-year services and may collaborate with local child care providers to help meet the child care needs of parents who are either working or in job training. Applicants must demonstrate their strong organizational capacity and fiscal responsibility, as well as the local need and demand for their services. Additionally, applicants must be able to provide for at least 20 percent of the total approved cost of the project.
