Three grant programs are available for non-profit organizations for projects which explore and discuss issues of importance to the state's residents. Eligible projects, with a focus on the humanities, can be of varied formats including open forums and discussions, media, written publications, research, and more. These funding opportunities support the development of high-quality educational programs based in the humanities, accessible programs that reach the broadest possible audience in Virginia, the work of humanities institutions and of local community organizations working within the humanities, and the exploration of stories that define Virginia and its people.

The Open Grant Program is open to proposals on a wide range of subjects, for projects in any format, and for amounts typically up to $10,000; the Discretionary Grant Program allows VFH to make smaller grants of up to $3,000; and the Virginia Indian Heritage Program Grants support projects that explore the history and cultures of Virginia’s Indian communities, past and present. Projects can focus on research, interpretation, or preservation of Virginia's Indian history and culture.
