Grants are available for youth-led groups residing in, and serving the needs of, local communities in North Carolina. The funding is provided to support projects and programs that address community issues and challenges, while at the same time engaging youth, enhancing their problem solving skills and giving them valuable tools, experience and knowledge.

Youth Grantmakers in Action (YGA) of The Winston-Salem Foundation is a diverse group of youth from across Forsyth County that unite to gain leadership experience, represent teens in their community, voice their opinions, and make grants to youth-directed projects that address community issues and challenges in Forsyth County. YGA is structured to support authentic, working partnerships between young people and adults in designing these community change projects.

Funding may be used for the following:
• Costs for an event, like equipment rental, space rental, awards, food, or CDs (with no explicit language)
• Materials or supplies like sports equipment, turntables, games, books, or markers
• Postage, printing, copying, or design costs
• Transportation costs (van rental, etc)
• Educational trips

The following areas will not be funded:
• Projects that are planned and led by adults.
• Salaries or stipends for adult allies or sponsors.
• Salaries or stipends for youth to carry out the project.
• Overhead incurred by the sponsoring organization.
• Anything that will not be directly used for the project.
• Any alcohol, tobacco, drug products, or video games.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

Eligibility requirements are as follows:
• Each group must have an adult ally/advisor and a sponsoring organization. This sponsoring organization can be a community group or school.
• The project must be planned by youth and carried out by youth. The majority of the group should be between 13 and 18 years old.

Pre-proposal Conference:

A grant writing workshop will take place Wednesday, January 11th at 5 PM at The Winston-Salem Foundation.

Pre-Application Information:

Applicants will be asked to attend an interview with the youth grant makers on February 25th.
