Grant Description

Grants to California organizations and individuals for initiatives related to recycling and waste prevention in eligible locations. Priority will be given to proposals that address the prevention of food waste, organics separation, and food donation in schools. Eligible applicants are those that serve citizens of Alameda County and the City of San Ramon.

The objectives of the Education Advisory Board are to promote waste prevention and recycling, job training and education through:

Waste prevention and recycling programs that serve schools (recycling supplies, program materials and other education activities such as field trips);
Projects in: waste prevention, source reduction, reuse, recycling, composting and procurement of recycled content products;
The Board is especially interested in supporting school projects in food waste prevention, food donation, and organics separation pursuant to Senate Bill 1383;
The Board prioritizes projects that provide a learning opportunity for students and/or the community and projects that result in high quality recovered materials and products;
Priority will be given to programs that change the culture/behavior of waste prevention and recycling in schools;
Community education through waste prevention, source-separation and recycling education programs;
Job training and internships in the field of waste prevention and recycling.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

Grant money is limited to individuals and organizations serving citizens of Alameda County and the city of San Ramon, with the exception of franchise waste haulers.

Past grant recipients have included teachers, schools, school districts, student councils, PTAs, individuals and non-profit organizations.

This grant year, grants for job training programs in general retail or construction will not be considered.

The Board will not fund hand dryers, water stations, battery chargers, document readers or gardening equipment.

Applications must be received by Friday, March 4, 2022.

Additional Funding Information:

Estimated Size of Grant:

- Mini-Grants: $500-$3,000
- Project Grants: Average approximately $20,000 each, with a maximum request of $50,000
- Multiple Year Grants: A limited number of multiple-year grants in excess of $50,000 will be considered.

Term of Contract:

- Multiple Year Grants: Up to three years of on-going support
- Mini-Grants and Project Grants: The grant objectives for the mini-grants and project grants should be accomplished within the 2022-2023 grant year.
