Grants of $50,000 to Northern California non-profit arts organizations that commission the creation and production of new plays by California playwrights. The purposes of these grants are to: (a) encourage the creative endeavors and professional development of highly gifted California playwrights; (b) support Bay Area theater organizations, interdisciplinary arts organizations, and community-based arts non-profits in their commitment to commission, develop, and produce new works by California playwrights; (c) foster and deepen the engagement between the playwright and the producing organization; and (d) support projects that reflect diverse cultural perspectives and communities.

Eligible arts organizations include:
• Theater company or ensemble
• Theater presenter
• Interdisciplinary arts presenter
• Community organization with a history of theater productions

Eligible projects include, but are not limited to, forms such as full-length plays, monologues, one-acts, shadow theater works, interdisciplinary theater works, collaborative projects, and community theater projects.

Please note: Organizations that are deeply rooted in underserved culturally specific communities are encouraged to apply.

Individual artists may not apply directly, but must be commissioned by one of the following eligible applicant organizations:
• Theater company or ensemble
• Theater presenter
• Interdisciplinary arts presenter
• Community organization with a history of theater productions

Please note: Fiscal sponsors are eligible on a case-by-case basis. Please call the Gerbode Foundation staff to ensure eligibility.

The applicant organization must:
1. Be a non-profit, tax-exempt, public charity organization that has been in existence in Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Monterey, Napa, Santa Clara, Santa Cruz, San Francisco, San Mateo, Solano, or Sonoma county for at least three years prior to the application deadline.
2. Have a strong proven track record of producing and/or presenting theater.
3. Demonstrate a history of working with theater artists.
4. Pay a fee between $12,500 and $25,000 to the commissioned playwright.
5. Have a demonstrated commitment to supporting and paying its artists.
6. Submit only one application per commission.

The proposed playwright must:
1. Meet one of the following criteria: (1) current California resident or (2) California resident during the last 24 months with a demonstrated recent history of producing or creating work in California before the time of the application.
2. Have a demonstrated artistic track record to date. (A resident playwright or a managing or artistic director of an organization or theater ensemble is eligible.)
3. Have experience commensurate with the design and goals of the proposed work.
4. Have written at least two plays, which have been given full productions. (Readings or workshops are not considered full productions.)
5. Have not received a commission grant funded by the Gerbode Foundation. (Past recipients of Hewlett and/or Gerbode foundation commissioning grants are, unfortunately, not eligible.)
6. Be nominated for one commission by only one organization.

The following projects are ineligible:
• New drafts of previously produced scripts
• Works-in-progress currently in rehearsal or development
• Translations or adaptations (New works that use another artist’s work as a source or an inspiration are eligible as long as the work proposed is a new and original vision.)
• Operas or musicals
• Commissions solely for student theater ensembles

Please note: The 2012 Gerbode/Hewlett Playwright Commissioning Awards will not support endowments, capital projects, or indirect costs.
