Grants to North Carolina nonprofit organizations in eligible regions for projects and programs to address needs within the community. Funding is intended for programmatic support, capital funding, and organizational development. Funds will also be allocated for programs and projects to address housing issues for low-income and homeless populations. Activities should benefit the residents of Burke County.

CFBC is inclined to give favorable consideration to proposals that:

  • Are pilot programs that can clearly be used as a model for others even though they may require funding over a period of up to three years;
  • Have reasonable prospects for achieving financial stability and have developed a reasonable plan to achieve that stability
  • Strengthens the community and provides opportunities for greater cultural awareness

Grant Types:

  • Organizational Development Grants: To provide support for nonprofits to retain a consultant to assist in strengthening their organization.
  • Programmatic Grants: To provide support for nonprofits to fund special projects that serve their client population or to support existing programs that have a demonstrated history of success.
  • Equipment Grants: To provide support for the purchase of equipment needed to serve the organization’s client population.  
  • Strategic Focus Grant: To provide support for a nonprofit who demonstrates collaboration and is focused on housing for low-income individuals/families and/or the homeless population. 

Limited Grants will be available for the following areas:

  • Bill and Hazel Bailey Abernathy Endowment Fund ($2,409) – Burke County charitable organizations located east of Valdese
  • Patton/Cornwell Fund ($5,389) educational opportunities for economically disadvantaged people including assistance to at-risk pre-school children
  • Emanuel A. and Romilda P. Richard Fund ($3,076) – projects that improve the quality of life in Burke County, North Carolina particularly in the municipality of Valdese, North Carolina
  • Wildcats Legacy Fund ($212.00) – Priority areas: housing, environment, housing for economically disadvantaged people; K-12 support for teacher and student education; and for those charitable purposes identified by the Foundation in their sole discretion.

Estimated Size of Grant:

- Organizational Development Grants: Grant amounts will be up to $5,000 maximum
- Programmatic Grants: Grant amounts will be up to $10,000 maximum
- Equipment Grants: Grant amounts will be up to $10,000 maximum
- Strategic Focus Grant: Grant amount will be up to $50,000 maximum

Term of Contract:

The Strategic Focus Grant period will not exceed two years. The grant period for all other grant types will not exceed one year.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

Community Grants allow the Community Foundation of Burke County (CFBC) to make grants to tax-exempt, 501(c)(3) organizations that have programs benefiting the residents of Burke County.

Community Grants will not be used for:
- Programs outside of Burke County unless directly benefiting Burke County
- Individual school projects, unless the project meets criteria listed below for Limited Grants or collaborates with another nonprofit
- Annual fund campaigns or capital campaigns
- Religious or political purposes
- Individuals (including scholarships)
- Organizations which have not been determined to be tax exempt as described in Section 509(a)(1) and 170B (1)(a) of the Internal Revenue Code
- Augmenting endowments
- Underwriting for fund raising events
- Underwriting for single performances

Grant Applications will be reviewed by the CFBC Grants Committee. The Grants Committee will make final recommendations to the Board of Directors at the regularly scheduled September meeting.
