Grants to Ohio nonprofit organizations and governmental agencies to enhance the lives of residents in eligible locations. Applicants must submit a letter of intent prior to submitting a full proposal. Funding is intended to support programs that address critical needs or present innovative approaches to ongoing problems in the community. The aim of the program is to build strong families and, in turn, to build a stronger community. Funded programs must serve the residents of Hancock County.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

Handbags That Help welcomes proposals from nonprofit organizations that are tax-exempt under sections 501(c)(3) and 509(a)(1) of the Internal Revenue Code and from governmental agencies serving Hancock County. Organizations may apply under another organization’s 501(c)(3) status acting as their fiscal sponsor.

Handbags That Help does not typically fund the following:
- Requests from individuals
- Unnecessary duplication of existing services
- Retroactive programs and projects
- Ongoing operating expenses, including existing salary positions
- Annual appeals or membership dues
- Fundraising projects or advertisements; endowment; debt reduction
- Capital requests or capital campaigns
- Religious organizations for religious purposes
- Partisan political advocacy
- Community services such as police and fire protection
- Staff positions for government agencies.
- Travel for individuals or groups when it is the primary focus of the proposal
- Sponsoring or attending conferences
- Stand-alone books, films or videos
- Computer equipment
- Medical research

Pre-proposal Conference:

General interest meeting and Q&A session for all organization will be held -Wednesday, August 10th, 2022, 4-5pm, Rm 118 The Family Center.

Attendance is NOT required to submit a grant proposal.

Pre-Application Information:

- Tuesday, September 6, 2022: Letter of Intent Due
- Monday, September 19, 2022: Proposals Selected. The grants committee will review the Letters of Intent and select which
organizations that have been chosen to submit a full grant proposal.
- Monday, November 7, 2022: Full Grant Proposal Due. The proposal must be emailed to Tasha Dimling and also must be mailed (i.e. postmarked) or delivered to The Community Foundation. Please note that the proposal must be postmarked or delivered to The Community Foundation (and received via email) on time to be considered.
- Monday, November 14, 2022 9:30 a.m.-11:30 a.m. The Family Center: Grant Presentations. Applicants will be asked to present their proposal to the Handbags That Help Grants Committee.
- Tuesday, November 15, 2022 - February 27, 2023: Site Visits.
- Wednesday, March 8, 2023 9:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. First Presbyterian Church: Membership Voting Meeting.
- Wednesday, April 19, 2023 5:30 p.m. Location TBD: Grant Awards.
- December 2023 9:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. Location TBD: Grant Follow-Up.

The amount available to grant will be announced in September.
