Grants to Iowa nonprofit organizations, government agencies, and educational organizations for capital projects that benefit residents in eligible locations. Funding is intended for a broad range of activities to help improve the local community. Funds must serve residents of Buena Vista County.

Currently the Foundation has three grant types for their funding cycles. These types are as follows:

  • Small Grants:  Designed to be an entry level grant that provides for the achievement of smaller projects or for smaller organizations with limited resources.
  • Medium Grants:  These grants are by far the largest percentage of what the foundation funds. The Medium Grants increase the award levels from the Small Grants and add some additional requirements.
  • Large Grants:  Designed specifically to be harder to achieve funding the type allows for funding of great projects that have larger costs but greater benefits.

Grants will generally fit into one of the following categories:

  • Youth Education/Development
  • Arts and Cultural Awareness
  • Environmental
  • Health & Human Services
  • Recreation
  • Community Betterment

Estimated Size of Grant:

- Small Grants: Limited to a maximum award of $2,000 (can be less).
- Medium Grants: Limited to a maximum award of $5,000 (can be less).
- Large Grants: Unlimited in terms of dollars. However, the Foundation only has limited funds available to grant out to organization, thus the Foundation reserves the right to cap funding and/or provide funding over an extended period of time.

Term of Contract:

- This timeline is 12-months beginning with the month immediately following notice of award.
- Extensions are required for any grant-funded project that is going to extend beyond the 12-month timeline to complete the project. The extension must be filed prior to the end of the 12-month grant timeline.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

The Buena Vista County Community Foundation seeks to provide grant funding to local not-for-profit groups in Buena Vista County. Applicants must be a 501.C.3 organization or a governmental or educational organization such as a City, County, or Community School District or utilize a fiscal agent.

Applicants who do not meet the 501.C.3 status required for funding or are not a City, County, or School District can still apply using a fiscal sponsor who does meet that requirement.

Applicants are eligible to be awarded one grant application per 12-month time period unless they have not yet completed their prior project in which case they are not eligible until that project is completed.

The Foundation does not provide grant funding for operational programming.

Pre-Application Information:

The deadline for turning in applications in the Fall 2022 round of grants is 4:00 P.M. on Thursday, July 29, 2022. Grants not received by July 29, 2022 (regardless of postmark date) will not be accepted or considered for this grant cycle.

Questions can be submitted via the Foundation's Facebook page or by email provided they are submitted at least five days prior to the grant deadline.

For Medium and Large Grants, a $1 for $1 match is required.
