Description:

Request a Grant Writer

Grants to Iowa nonprofit organizations, governmental agencies, and educational organizations for capital projects that benefit residents in eligible regions. Focus areas include recreation, the environment, youth education and development, health and human services, community betterment, and arts and cultural awareness. Eligible projects are those that benefit residents of Buena Vista County.

Currently the Foundation has three grant types for their funding cycles. These types are as follows:

  • Small Grants:  Designed to be an entry level grant that provides for the achievement of smaller projects or for smaller organizations with limited resources.
  • Medium Grants:  These grants are by far the largest percentage of what the foundation funds. The Medium Grants increase the award levels from the Small Grants and add some additional requirements.
  • Large Grants:  Designed specifically to be harder to achieve funding the type allows for funding of great projects that have larger costs but greater benefits.

- Small Grants: Limited to a maximum award of $2,000.00 (can be less)
- Medium Grants: Limited to a maximum award of $5,000.00 (can be less).
- Large Grants: Unlimited in terms of dollars. However, the Foundation only has limited funds available to grant out to organization, thus the Foundation reserves the right to cap funding and/or provide funding over an extended period of time.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

Funds granted through the grant program must benefit Buena Vista County residents and/or organizations. Applicants must be a 501.C.3 organization or a governmental or educational organization such as a City, County, or Community School District or utilize a fiscal agent.

The foundation does not provide grant funding for operational programming. Staff costs and training are not eligible costs. The Foundation does not fund operational projects or projects that are maintenance or needed because of the lack of maintenance.

Pre-proposal Conference:

In an effort to assist organizations who wish to apply for a grant in the spring grant cycle the foundation will make the following opportunities available:

1. The Foundation will be hosting a grant writer’s workshop live via Zoom on Saturday, January 23rd at 8:30 A.M. The session will be available by invite only and is free. To attend the training session and get the Zoom information for the session please email the foundation at the email address listed below. Please provide the name of the individual attending and the agency(ies) that you are representing.

2. The Foundation will offer a limited number of individual “feedback sessions” in which participating agencies will have the opportunity to meet with a small number of board members via Zoom for 10-15 minutes to get feedback on your project and application. You will be required to sign up in advance and provide information on your project prior to getting invited to participate in the session. Again these sessions will be limited to a small number of applicants and will be offered on a first-come, first-serve basis. The sessions will be held on the morning of Saturday, February 13, 2021.

Pre-Application Information:

The deadline for turning in applications in the Spring 2021 round of grants is 4:00 P.M. on Thursday, March 4, 2021.

Buena Vista County Foundation will be posting tips and tricks on the foundation’s Facebook page. Questions can be submitted via the foundation's Facebook page or by email provided they are submitted at least five days prior to the grant deadline.

- Small Grants: No matching funds required but it is always good to show that the organization supports the project by providing some resources to the effort.
- Medium Grants: A $1 for $1 match is required but the match can be either cash or in-kind donations or services.
- Large Grants: Required $1 for $1 cash match. Example: An award for $10,000 would have to be matched with cash from the grantee of $10,000 or another non-county foundation source.
