Grants of up to $50,000 to USA non-profit organizations, community-based organizations, and Native American tribes that are seeking funds to implement measurable, on-the-ground restoration and citizen-based monitoring projects on, or around, national forests and/or grasslands. The most successful projects will do the following:

1a. Conduct highly targeted work that advances one, or more, of a Wilderness Area’s eligible stewardship elements, especially if the element is managed below standard; and/or

1b. Conduct the above work in one or more Priority 1 or Priority 2 Wilderness Areas (see the attached Appendix for a chart).

2. Include a high level of community involvement or participation in the project.

3. Enhance the capacity of local group involvement in the effective stewardship of Wilderness Areas.

4. Be applicable to other Wilderness Areas through easily transferable projects and/or monitoring plans and sharing of lessons learned, and include a plan for doing so.

Proposed projects must be able to be completed within one year of the award.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

Applications will be considered from non-federal partners, community-based organizations, Native American tribes, and 501(c)(3) non-profit organizations implementing action-oriented, on-the-ground conservation and citizen-based monitoring projects on, or around, National Forests or Grasslands.

Applications will not be considered from:
* Federal agencies;
* Regional, state, or local governmental entities;
* For-profit organizations;
* Consultants;
* Educational and research organizations proposing projects that do not show tangible, on-the-ground benefit;
* Organizations seeking general operating or programmatic support; and
* Organizations seeking funding for litigation or advocacy.

Pre-Application Information:

Proposals for the Wilderness Stewardship Challenge (WSC) are selected for funding through a one-stage request for proposals. The process, from proposal submission to notification of funding, generally takes about eight weeks.

• Proposals are only accepted in hard-copy format and must be received on, or before, January 22, 2014.

• Late proposals, faxed, or emailed submissions will not be considered.
