Grants to local Iowa nonprofit organizations and agencies that provide high-quality, effective services for the benefit of those living and working in Mahaska County. These grants are specifically intended to support proposals focusing on the areas of, education, income and financial stability, and health.

Eligible programs are classified as follows:

Education - "Encourage personal advancement through education."

Goal: All Mahaska County students enter school ready to learn and graduate prepared for careers.

Objective: UWMC will support programs that assist in school readiness, early grade literacy, and career and life preparedness in our communities. 

UWMC'S Work:
- Ensure families in need have access to the supplies that will help their children thrive in school through Operation Backpack. 
- Support United Ways of Iowa in their Reading Corps Program, which brings volunteers into elementary schools with the goal of every student being proficient in reading by third grade.  
- Partner with agencies that address this objective through financial giving and other supports.
Looking Forward: 
- Research, develop, and launch an Imagination Library program in Mahaska County.
- Develop and deploy a base of volunteers in Mahaska County schools. 

Income - "Improve financial stability and self-sufficiency."

Goal: All Mahaska County residents are economically stable and self-sufficient.

Objective: UWMC will support programs that give food, shelter, transportation, and healthcare assistance, and support financial education and debt reduction.

UWMC's Work:
- Help area agencies and families in need through Day of Caring, where local volunteers spend a day cleaning, painting, building, and gardening at projects throughout the community. 
- Provide free preparation of income tax returns for low-income families through UWMC's VITA Tax Site. 
- Continue to support Oskaloosa Rides to help increase access to retail, healthcare, and other services to those without a vehicle. 
- Partner with agencies that address this objective through financial giving and other supports.
Looking Forward: 
Work with stakeholders to expand community support programs that deal with bringing people out of poverty.

Health - "Promote mental and physical health and wellness."

Goal: All Mahaska County residents lead active, safe, and healthy lives.

Objective: UWMC will support programs that prevent disease, substance abuse, domestic violence, and child abuse while supporting those affected, as well as programs that encourage children and adults to lead more healthy and active lives.

UWMC'S Work:
- Raise awareness of healthy living initiatives in the community through the Color Me United 5K.
- Continue to support community wellness initiatives through Mahaska Wellness Coalition.
- Continue to expand programs that address childhood hunger, including Oskaloosa Summer Lunch and Take-Along Weekend Food programs.
- Partner with agencies that address this objective through financial giving and other supports.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

To be eligible for funding, a program must be administered by a 501(c)3 nonprofit and be located in Mahaska County, Iowa.

Pre-Application Information:

All of the attached documents below need to be completed for applications to be considered. All completed documents and other needed materials should be submitted in person or by mail by Monday, January 8th, 2018 at Noon.

If you are requesting funding for more than one program, please complete a separate application for each program.
