Grants to Ontario elementary and high schools in eligible areas for programs to encourage healthy eating and increase the consumption of fruits and vegetables. Funding is intended to support educational projects at home, school, and in local communities throughout the Province. All funding must support the selected school’s nutrition education initiatives. Grants will be awarded to schools located within a radius of 30 km of a Metro or Food Basics store.

Project Ideas:

  • Prepare healthy lunches for students
  • Get ‘Kids in the Kitchen’ by facilitating a cooking session for students to teach important tips on healthy alternatives.
  • Hire a nutritionist to come in and speak to the students on the importance of healthy eating, meal planning advice, tips, and recipes etc
  • Publish a healthy recipe cookbook
  • Design a healthy menu for the school cafeteria
  • Organize a healthy recipe contest
  • Create a posting campaign in the school on the benefits of healthy eating
  • Organize a full day of activities oriented towards healthy eating

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

To qualify, schools must be registered Ontario elementary or high school, public or private. Daycares and adult education courses are not permitted.

Anyone affiliated with the school (principal, teacher, professional advisors, nurses, etc.) can submit an idea with the principal’s approval.

Pre-Application Information:

Must submit their application by December 31, 2020– note that grants may be allocated by this time, so applications should be submitted as soon as possible. Applications must be submitted online by completing the appropriate form.

Must have approval from school principal to set-up the project and administer the funds.

Metro reserves the right to allow grants according to geographic representation across the province.

Projects will be analyzed on a first-come, first-serve basis and grants will be allocated if all the conditions are met.

Funding will be paid directly to the selected school (made payable to the school as detailed in the application form) to cover the expenses of their project. Any one school can receive a maximum of two grants during the school year for two different projects.

If a grant is awarded, a check payable to the school will be sent directly to the Principal (please ensure that they are aware they will be receiving it). Please allow 6-8 weeks for the check to be processed once the project has been accepted.
