Grants of $20,000 are available to USA universities and colleges to partner with critical-need K-12 schools for teacher training programs. A Letter of Intent to apply must be submitted by March 3, 2014. The goal of the grant is to provide 30 or more hours of intensive professional development for teachers focused on training students to meet exacting college- and career-ready writing standards during the school year and summer.
The goals of the funding include: improving teacher practice in the teaching of academic writing through increasing the amount of time spent on writing instruction; increasing the number of extended writing assignments; and improving the quality of writing assignments and their alignment with college- and career-ready standards.
Professional development programs should provide opportunities for teachers to work together to understand the full spectrum of writing development across grades and across subject areas.
Effective professional development programs provide frequent and ongoing opportunities for teachers to write and to examine theory, research, and practice together systematically.
