Grants of up to $7,500 are available to Minnesota municipalities and others for small short-term projects in the area of Lake Superior. Funding will be provided for education projects or environmental protection and management. Previous projects addressed issues regarding wetlands, invasive plants, bird migration, erosion and sediment control, and more.

Specifically, projects must address issues within Minnesota’s Lake Superior Coastal Program’s management boundary. Grant categories are:
-Coastal Outreach & Education
-Coastal Natural Resources Enhancement, Protection, and Management.

Up to $7,500

Projects must be finished within 6 months; estimated start and end dates: 6/2014 - 12/2014

State agencies
Area-wide agencies, including county and regional planning agencies
Conservation districts and port authorities
Tribal governments
Joint powers boards
Sanitary sewer boards

Projects must be located entirely within Minnesota’s Lake Superior Coastal Program’s (MLSCP) management boundary as defined in MLSCP document http://files.dnr.state.mn.us/waters/lakesuperior/feis/mlscp_feis5.pdf, unless an applicant can demonstrate that the project will have direct substantial benefits within the coastal region.

Note that the program boundary may include only portions of the eligible local units of government. Please consult http://mndnr.gov/waters/lakesuperior/maps.html for additional details.

Projects must be matched at least 50/50 or 1:1.

STAR grant funds are distributed on a reimbursement basis.
