Grant Description
Grants to New York nonprofit organizations and local agencies to increase tourism in eligible regions. Funding may be used to support projects and investments such as museums, theaters, and other recreational and cultural attractions. The funds can be used for design, renovation, and new building projects; investments in unique permanent installations such as exhibits; and feasibility studies of potential capital projects. Funding is intended to promote economic development and enhance the quality of life in Tompkins County.

Examples of projects funded include the Dryden Rail Trail; Friends of Stewart Park Inclusive Playground Building and Splash Pad; renovation of Discover Cayuga Lake’s charter boat for eco-cruises; Tompkins Center for History and Culture buildout; and visitor amenities for the Cayuga Waterfront Trail.

Eligible Activities – Capital Investment Projects

New construction and renovation projects are eligible. The project may provide expansion or renovation to existing facilities or may be a totally new facility. Eligible costs include:

  • Acquisition of land
  • Acquisition, construction, and renovation of buildings
  • Acquisition of furnishings, equipment, permanent exhibitions, and other capital improvements designed to serve or promote tourism over a minimum of five years
  • Design services for the project

Eligible Activities – Feasibility Studies

Studies should lead to a capital investment as described above. Eligible projects include:

  • Concept level design and determination of cost estimates
  • Tourism plan for a capital project
  • Business plan for a capital project

Eligible Applicants:
- Non-profit organizations designated as 501(c)3
- Municipalities within Tompkins County

Ineligible
Limitations:
- Grant funds cannot be used to refinance existing debt, for applicant’s overhead costs, or for operating expenses.
- Fundraising feasibility studies are not eligible

Pre-Application Information
The 2023 Tourism Capital grant cycle is now accepting applications. Applications are due by Thursday, Aug. 31, before 11:59 pm ET.

Tompkins County Area Development (TCAD) assists with the administration of this grant program. All parties interested in this grant are strongly encouraged to schedule a pre-application meeting.

Grant funds may contribute up to one-third (33%) of eligible costs of capital investment projects.

Applicants for Capital Investment Projects must demonstrate a financial match of at least two-thirds (67%) of the total project cost. This match can be provided from the following sources: Cash; In-kind donations of goods and professional services that would otherwise be purchased for the project.

Estimated Size of Grant
Typical Award Range: $5,000 to $100,000.

Term of Contract
Capital Investment Projects are expected to have a minimum five-year useful life span.
