Grants to Northfield area, Minnesota nonprofit organizations for youth recreational programs. Funding is intended for events and services that benefit youth, ages 16 and younger, as well as the local community. Recreation may include a broad range of activities, such as: athletics, outdoor skills, arts, crafts, music, theater, dance, construction or mechanical endeavors, and enrichment. Any budgeted salaries will be for program staff, i.e., teachers, counselors, guides, or mentors.

Grants will be awarded for projects that create long-term solutions, enhance the overall well-being of the community and generate the biggest multiplier effect.

Northfield Shares is particularly interested in funding:

  • Projects that facilitate cooperation and collaboration between and among organizations in the Northfield area. 
  • Projects that encourage volunteerism and involve stakeholders in the implementation of the grant.
  • Projects that provide leverage for generating other funds and community resources for the Northfield area, including matching or supplemental funds.
  • Beautification projects with special consideration given to sustainable projects that protect and enhance the environment.
  • Projects that will support youth and young adults in the Northfield area to reach their full potential.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

Grants are made only to tax-exempt institutions or agencies; no grants are made directly to individuals.

Organizations are eligible to receive funds for a maximum of three consecutive years and then become ineligible for one year.

Budgeted salaries are not intended for administration. The funds will not be used as an administrative transfer or undertaking already in progress.

No grants will be made for the following types of projects unless there are compelling reasons to do so:
- Support for general operating expenses
- Basic municipal services
- Purchasing real estate
- Endowment campaigns
- Previously incurred debt
- Sectarian religious programs
- For-profit organizations
- Lobbying

Pre-Application Information:

The online application will open on September 1, and the deadline is October 15, 2019.

Applicants will be notified in late fall of the grant decisions, with funds being disbursed by end of the calendar year.
