Request a Grant Writer

Grants of up to $1,000 to St. Clair County, Illinois schools, municipalities, food pantries, neighborhoods, parks, churches, and other groups and organizations for community garden projects. Funding may be requested to improve an existing garden or to start a new garden. The purpose of this program is to increase access to fruits and vegetables and to provide an opportunity for physical activity related to gardening.

In order to qualify for a grant, the garden project must devote at least 75% of the garden space to food rather than flowers. Applications must demonstrate a plan to sustain the garden and keep the project going.

Preferential consideration will be given to garden projects that:
1) Provide foods to at-risk people (low income, children, or pregnant women)
2) Encourage joint-use between the applicant and other community, citizen, or school groups
3) Are located in community or neighborhood parks in St. Clair County

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

Community parks and recreation departments, food pantries, public housing organizations, schools, neighborhoods, municipalities, churches, or other groups and organizations are encouraged to submit applications.

Recipients may not use funds for salaries or gift cards.

Pre-Application Information:

Completed applications must be received by email by March 31. Mailed copies must be postmarked by March 28 and mailed to Box 304, Belleville, IL 62220- Attention Garden Grant Program.

Awardees must purchase materials and submit receipts for reimbursement. Reimbursement can be expected within 45 days of submitting receipts.

Garden projects must include a cash or in-kind match.
