Grants to Wayne County, Michigan churches, nonprofit and civic organizations, schools, and community groups to create local community gardens. Funding is intended to provide eligible applicants with the opportunity to create fresh produce for local residents and assist low-income residents experiencing food insecurity.

Acceptance into the Community Garden Program allows the applicant to receive Wayne Metro sponsorship through the receipt of seeds, plant starters, garden tools (as available), and technical assistance for the creation and harvesting a community garden. Awarded applicants are expected to ensure low-income community residents receive harvested, fresh produce in a timely manner.

Prospective gardens must meet/demonstrate the following requirements to be eligible for consideration:
- Access to a water source.
- Dedicated volunteers to create, maintain, and harvest a garden.
- Pick up seeds and plants on designated date and time.
- Plant all sponsored seeds and plants.
- Ensure all produce reach low-income community residents.
- Allow Wayne Metro staff to conduct monitoring visits and take photos of the garden.
- Complete all reporting documents by designated deadlines.

Term of Contract:

The planting of all sponsored seeds and plants, for cold weather, must be by April 25, 2019 and for warm weather, by May 26, 2019.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

Grants are provided to eligible local churches, nonprofit or civic organization, schools, and community groups.

Pre-Application Information:

To be considered for acceptance into the program, a completed and signed application must be submitted through email or mail by 5:00 PM on Friday, January 19th, 2019, and notification of acceptance will be sent by January 28th.

Awarded gardens will receive notification and have an opportunity to complete an order form in February 2019.
