Grants to California nonprofit organizations that produce public art events in eligible regions. Funding is intended to support organizations that enhance the local region's attractiveness to visitors through the creation of annual public events that preserve and celebrate the cultural identity and traditional activities of San Francisco's various populations.

The mission of Grants for the Arts (GFTA) is to promote the City by supporting the arts.

General Operating Support: Parades and Festivals

This program offers unrestricted, general operating support grants to arts and cultural nonprofits that are physically based in San Francisco and have as their primary purpose the presentation of parades or festivals in San Francisco public spaces.

Events seeking support from this program must:

  • Have an art component to the parade or festival.
  • Take place in public spaces.
  • Produce a parade or festival that broadly celebrates and preserves the cultural identity and/or traditional activity related to the City’s diverse communities.
  • Professionally produce a San Francisco parade or festival for at least three years.
  • Plan and publicize public event(s) to attract visitors to San Francisco.
  • Contribute to the City’s reputation as a cultural destination by reaching a definable audience as evidenced by recording reasonable estimates of attendance.
  • Demonstrate fiscal responsibility, evidenced by:
    • Receiving non-GFTA sources of funding;
    • Maintaining insurance policies required by the City Risk Manager.

Operating expenditures for San Francisco activities only may be submitted — for example: net salaries (with the exception of development staff), wages, fees, rental of equipment, rental of halls/studios, telephone charges, advertising and publicity expenses, stationery and office supplies.

Applicants may use up to 15% of your award for capital expenditures.

Estimated Size of Grant:

Applicants are not restricted in the amounts they request. One factor in determining a grant amount is the three-year average of an organizations operating budget. For reference, below are the approximate budget percentages currently being used as guidelines for GFTA’s General Operating Support—Arts grants.
- Budgets of under $350,000 – 15%.
- Budgets of more than $350,000 but less than $750,000 – 10%.
- Budgets of more than $750,000 but less than $1,000,000 – 8%.
- Budgets of more than $1,000,000 but less than $3,000,000 – 6%.
- Budgets of more than $3,000,000 but less than $10,000,000 – 5%
- Budgets of more than $10,000,000 but less than $25,000,000 – 2%
- Budgets of more than $25,000,000 – no more than 1%

Term of Contract:

Reimbursable services are only those rendered within the period of the Agreement; invoices dated prior to July 1 or after June 30 cannot be reimbursed.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

- Have a 501(c)(3) nonprofit status or a valid fiscal sponsor.
- Maintain a corporate address in the City and County of San Francisco for at least three full years at the time of application.
