Grants to Linn County, Iowa nonprofit organizations and government agencies to improve the quality of life for local residents. Funding is intended to support currently existing programs, implement new and innovative programs, and restore natural and cultural resources by means of historic preservation projects.

Estimated Size of Grant:

Multi-year grants may not exceed $60,000 over the duration of the request. For example, a three-year request is limited to $20,000/year; or a two-year request may be $30,000/year for two years with no request for the third year. Single year requests for the same project also may not exceed a total of $60,000 during a three-year-period.

The Community Foundation does not generally fund more than 20% of an organization’s budget.

New initiatives are always limited to a maximum of $15,000.

Maximum grant award amount is determined according to organization age and budget size:

Organizations less than 2 years old:
- Budget of $0 - $100K: Maximum award of $10,000
- Budget of $100K - $750K: Maximum award of $15,000
- Budget of $750K: Generally not applicable to new organizations

Organizations of 2+ years:
- Budget of $0 - $100K: Maximum award of $15,000 per year
- Budget of $100K - $750K: Maximum award of $30,000 per year
- Budget of $750K: Maximum award of $30,000 per year

Organizations of 7+ years:
- Budget of $0 - $100K: Maximum award of $15,000 per year
- Budget of $100K - $750K: Maximum award of $30,000 per year
- Budget of $750K: Maximum award of $30,000 per year

Term of Contract:

Organizations less than 2 years old may receive grants with a maximum grant duration of 12 months.

Organizations in existence 2+ years may receive grants with a maximum grant duration of 24 months.

Organizations in existence 7+ years may receive grants with a a maximum grant duration of 36 months.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

To receive a grant from the Community Foundation, the applicant organization must be one of the following:

- A non-profit with a 501(c)(3) status
- A governmental organization
- A non-501(c)(3) organization that has arranged to have a fiscal sponsor

Multiple organizations may submit a joint application for a collaborative project. Contact a program officer to discuss.

Funds are not intended to assist with capital infrastructure projects (bricks and mortar).

Ineligible Activities:

- Fundraising events and activities
- Religious activities ( contact program officer for clarification)
- Scholarships for primary and secondary education and post-secondary degree programs
- Expenses for projects and programs that have already occurred or will occur during the grant review process

Low Priority Activities:

- Travel out of the region

Pre-Application Information:

The deadlines for Program Fund applications are February 15, June 14, and September 20 4:30 PM CST.

If you are new to the grant application process, or if you have questions, you are encouraged to speak to a Program Officer. Program Officers can help determine which fund(s) you are eligible to apply for and are glad to discuss proposals before you submit them. To allow time for reviewing and discussing a proposal, please contact the Foundation at least three to six weeks before the grant deadline. In order to apply online, you must first request grant portal access. To do so, you must request a grant administrator by having an organization leader send an email. Within two business days, both the applicant organization's grant administrator and leader will receive an email with a username and password. (Note: Organizations will not have access to the online application portal until they have received this username and password.)

Limit of two applications per calendar year. (Number based on limit of two active grants from these funds.) Limit of one application per fund per cycle.

Awards are not intended to replace public dollars, but may be used to supplement public funding for specific initiatives.
