Grants of up to $25,000 to Linn County, Iowa nonprofit organizations to build endowments with the purpose of creating a long-term, sustainable funding source. Funding is intended to ensure an organization's future by providing support for general organizational expenses, stability during cyclical income variances, and income for areas of high importance to the organization.

Estimated Size of Grant:

In the Endowment Challenge match, the Community Foundation will contribute up to a maximum of $25,000.

There is no minimum size of contribution; every gift will be fully matched by the Community Foundation up to the maximum amount per donor, as follows:

- For Operating Budgets of up to $750,000: Maximum Match per Donor is $5,000 (donor gift $15,000)
- For Operating Budgets of $750,000-$2,000,000: Maximum Match per Donor is $2,500 (donor gift $7,500)
- For Operating Budgets starting at $2,000,000: Maximum Match per Donor is $1,000 (donor gift $3,000)

Term of Contract:

Recipients will have five years to meet the match.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

Nonprofit organizations in Linn County, Iowa, that are at least seven years old (based on the date of the IRS letter of determination) and hold 501(c)(3) status may apply if they meet two or more of the following criteria:

- The organization is based in Linn County
- The organization serves residents of Linn County
- A received Endowment Challenge grant will only serve residents of Linn County
- The organization currently holds one or more agency endowed funds at the Community Foundation. The fund(s) must have been opened and have a balance at or above the $10,000 fund minimum at least one year prior to the date of application.

Ineligible Organizations:

- Organizations that do not meet two or more of the above criteria
- Organizations with a core religious mission

Pre-Application Information:

The deadline is June 14, 4:30 PM CST.

All Endowment Challenge grants are awarded as a 3:1 matching grant.

Management of Endowment Challenge Grants:

- After an Endowment Challenge grant is awarded, the Community Foundation’s Development staff will contact the
recipient organization to set up the organization’s Endowment Challenge Fund, which must be held at the Greater Cedar Rapids Community Foundation.

- The Community Foundation will match gifts deposited into the organization’s Endowment Challenge Fund quarterly until the match is completed or at the end of five years from the time of award. Once the challenge is complete, donor contributions and the Community Foundation match remain in the Endowment Challenge Fund, which is an Agency Friends Fund.
