Grant of $30,000 to a Raleigh, North Carolina nonprofit organization for a program or project that addresses environmental justice. Funding is intended to support initiatives that build community through advocacy, public engagement, or direct services. Preference will be given to programs that have a direct impact on Raleigh residents.

The Beehive Collective is particularly interested in projects or programs that are innovative, measurable, and sustainable; grassroots and community-led; incorporate policy and/or systems change; forge partnerships with other groups working towards similar goals; equip communities with the tools or resources they need to advocate for themselves; or provide or work towards a more fair, equitable, and just community.

The Beehive Collective views environmental justice as the fair treatment and meaningful involvement of all people regardless of race, gender, national origin, ability, or income with respect to the development, implementation, and enforcement of environmental laws, regulations, and policies. An ideal application will request funding for a project that addresses the following:

Community-based, grassroots-driven program

  • Promotes equitable engagement and shared decision making by community residents, stakeholders, and leadership
  • Involves people and communities who are affected by the problems and solutions

Justice for All

  • Ensures equitable treatment for individuals and groups and that no one 
  • benefits to the detriment of others; fair and equitable access to resources.
  • Demands that all people have equitable access to political and economic power and resources

Project Examples:

  • Public projects in underserved communities designed to have positive social, economic and environmental benefits
  • Apprenticeships to develop skills for jobs in environmental stewardship
  • Support or advocacy for investments in environmentally equitable infrastructure
  • Scholarships for training community ambassadors, grant-writing, and providing tools, etc. to become environmental stewards and advocates
  • Funding to increase community resiliency in the aftermath of storms for underserved populations

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

In order to qualify for a Beehive Collective grant, organizations must:

1. Be a 501(c)3 organization or have a partner fiscal agent*
2. Request funding for a Raleigh-based program that builds community through direct services, advocacy, or public engagement.
3. Directly address an issue related to our 2019 theme of “Environmental Justice”.

Proposals requesting funds for statewide or national level projects will not be considered.

Recipients of a Beehive Collective large grant in 2016, 2017 or 2018 may not apply during this cycle.

The Beehive Collective usually does not award grants to organizations that:
- Cannot demonstrate working directly in Raleigh.
- Cannot demonstrate a need.
- Cannot show long-lasting effects from using Beehive funds.
- Seek capital funds (purchasing land or buildings).
- Propose to use Beehive funds for fundraising.

- October 2019: Site visits to semi-finalists
- November 2019: Selection of Finalists
- Mid-December 2019: Announcement of Grant Recipient
