Grants of up to $5,000 to USA college and university mathematics teachers to advance the use of a student-driven teaching style in a summer, winter, or regular-term course. Eligible activities include the development of course materials, organizing seminars, and other activities directly addressing the need to support and advance the use of this form of instruction at the college level.

The purpose of these grants is to increase the use of Inquiry-Based Learning (IBL) in mathematics education through development of an IBL course or dissemination of IBL methods. More information about the IBL teaching style may be found here: http://www.inquirybasedlearning.org/?page=What_is_IBL

Estimated Size of Grant:

Summer salary - $2,500; Winter break salary - $1,500; Course release - Up to $5,000.

Term of Contract:

Projects to be conducted in Winter/Spring 2015, Summer 2015, and/or Fall 2015. Projects may extend into Spring 2016.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

The Small Grants Program primarily focuses on supporting college math faculty, including faculty who teach courses for future elementary or secondary teachers. Faculty can only apply for one small grant per cohort.

Restrictions:
-A person may be awarded one grant from each category during his or her lifetime.
-Larger projects, such as the development of a significant amount of curriculum (beyond one or two courses), and projects that have a significant math education research focus are beyond the scope of this program.
-Funds may not be used to purchase equipment.

-Write a proposal narrative that describes the project, the timeline, and expected outcomes. The narrative should also include an itemized budget. (Proposals are typically 2-5 pages in length.)

-Submit a current CV.

-Note: Proposals requesting course release time must include a letter of support from a supervisor/administrator indicating the dollar amount.

-Email your narrative, CV, and any necessary or relevant letter(s) in PDF format to Stan Yoshinobu, Director of AIBL.
