Grants of up to $500 and grants of up to $10,000 to New Jersey nonprofit organizations, associations, societies, and individuals in eligible locations for history, culture, and arts activities that benefit local residents. Funding is intended to increase the impact and visibility of local and county history, the arts, culture, goals, and traditions of the community. All grantees receiving over $2,000 must demonstrate a countywide benefit as a result of the grant. Eligible applicants are located in Hunterdon County.

Special Project Grants: The goals and objectives of the Special Project grant awards include, but are not limited to:

  1. Developing and supporting accessible programs and projects that promote interest in local history and the arts to a broad range of Hunterdon County residents
  2. Developing audiences and organizational memberships; removing cultural, economic, geographical, intellectual and physical barriers to participation by all persons in all cultural activities
  3. Advancing and encouraging self-sufficiency and professional growth of individuals and organizations involved in history, and all facets of the world of art, music and dance
  4. Building community collaborations and partnerships
  5. Broadening, deepening, and diversifying the audience for arts and history in Hunterdon County

Mini Grants: Hunterdon County Cultural & Heritage Commission will award Mini Grants to nongovernmental organizations. Special Project Grant guidelines, terms and conditions apply, with two exceptions.

Number of Grants:

Mini Grants: Up to five mini-grants will be awarded.

Estimated Size of Grant:

Funding is TBD but anticipated to remain level for 2022 at $22,500

- Special Projects Grants: Funding requests are limited to $10,000. For organizations with budgets $10,000 and lower, funding requests are limited to no more than 20% of your annual budget.
- Mini Grants: $500

Term of Contract:

Availability of Funds: June 2022 (or after County Budget is approved)
Funding Period: April 1 - December 31, 2022
If the project cannot be completed by December 31, 2022, the grantee is required to submit a written request for an extension by 3:00pm, November 16, 2022. Project extension requests are subject to approval by the Commission.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

Hunterdon County not-for-profit arts, cultural, historical/preservation organizations, associations, committees,
commissions, societies, and individuals are invited to apply.

Applicants submitting for funding under this program are ineligible for other grant programs administered by the Commission (LAP, CHPP) within the same calendar year.

Individuals are not eligible to apply for MiniGrants.

Ineligible applicants include departments, agencies, boards, commissions and committees of county and/or municipal government; municipal governments; county and branch libraries; and schools. Special Project grant applicants are ineligible to apply for a Mini-Grant in the same calendar year, or to apply for any other grant program administered by the HCC&HC (Local Arts Program, County History Partnership Program) in the same calendar year, or if they have an incomplete Special Project Grant more than one year old. Ineligible Use of Grant Funds
a) Administrative costs or general operating expenses, other than for the proposed program or project
b) Payment or salary to board or staff members as contractors or artists (e.g., board members cannot receive artist fees)
c) Payment/fees for grant writers
d) Hospitality costs
e) General administrative salaries/wages/ fringe benefits of staff or board members
f) Projects that are primarily recreational and do not promote the grant program goals and objectives
g) Scholarship funds/awards
h) Previous program deficits or to cover loans/losses
i) Foreign/out of state travel
j) Work that is underway or has already taken place
k) Construction/capital repairs
l) Projects in educational/religious institutions that exclude non-students or non-congregational members

Special Project Grant Timeline:
- Monday, February 21, 2022: Grant Applications due
- March/April 2022: Grant review panel sessions convened
- May/June 2022: County Budget Accepted
- May/June 2022: Grants Announced at BOCC meeting
- June 2022: Grant Contracts, Revised Budgets due
- January 2, 2023: Final Reports due
