Award to a Santa Barbara County, California PreK-12 teacher for excellence in education. The recipient will serve as a representative of all teachers and a voice celebrating the profession. The winning County Teacher of the Year will become a competitor for the California State Teacher of the Year.

The awardee will be an excellent instructional leader and an effective communicator regarding the issues and challenges confronting teachers today, as well as an advocate and representative for the entire educational community. This individual will also represent teachers at educational forums and speak at local service and educational events.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

-Any fully credentialed, PreK-12 teacher in Santa Barbara County whose primary responsibility is teaching students.

-Applicants must have taught in the classroom for at least 8 full years.

-State requirements are subject to change and may affect the candidate’s eligibility for California State Teacher of the Year.

Pre-Application Information:

Districts are encouraged to nominate one teacher as their district’s applicant, and teachers may also self-nominate.

The nomination process for 2019 Santa Barbara County Teacher of the Year begins at the district level in fall, 2017.

District Nominations: December, 2017

Application Deadline: February 2, 2018 (for district AND self-nominees)

Include three letters of support, on letterhead if possible, from among the following: district superintendent, principal, administrator, colleague, student, parent, or community civic leader.

Notification of finalists will be made approximately four to five weeks after the application deadline.

The official announcement of the 2019 Santa Barbara County Teacher of the Year will be made at the May 3, 2018 SBCEO Board Meeting. A press conference will immediately follow.
