Grants of up to $10,000 to North Carolina nonprofit, institutional, industrial, and commercial entities in eligible locations for waste prevention initiatives. Funding is intended to support creative business waste-reduction and recycling efforts, with the goal of decreasing the quantity of waste sent to landfills. Eligible applicants are located in and serve Wake County.

The proposed project must be in the area of waste prevention, composting, reuse, recycling, or recycling market development and have a significant impact in Wake County. Funds may also be requested for educational programs that promote waste prevention, composting, reuse, recycling, and buying recycled in Wake County.

Estimated Size of Grant:

The minimum grant awarded is $500 and the maximum is $10,000.

Term of Contract:

Grantees will be expected to execute their projects between January 1, and June 30, 2021.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

Commercial, industrial, institutional, and nonprofits agencies are eligible to apply for the Commercial Waste Reduction Grants.

Proposed projects must be in compliance with all federal, state, and local statutes, rules and regulations, including, but not limited to zoning, labor, and transportation laws.

Commercial Waste Reduction funds may not be used for the following purposes:
- Repayment of existing debt or pre-existing tax liens or obligations
- Payment of organizational overhead
- Fellowships, scholarships or endowment funds
- Legal fees
- Loan or bank fees
- Subsidization of existing contracts
- On-going garbage or recycling collection service fees
- Labor costs

Pre-Application Information:

Applications are due by 5:00 PM on Friday, November 20, 2020.

Applicants are encouraged to discuss potential ideas with Wake County Solid Waste Management staff before submitting a proposal.

Grant winners will be announced in January 2021.
