Grants to Georgetown County, South Carolina nonprofits, for-profits, and government agencies for a broad range of projects and events to promote tourism in the local area. Funding from this program must be used to attract or provide for tourists. Qualifying tourism-related activities include the following:
a. Advertising and promotion of tourism so as to develop and increase tourist attendance through the generation of publicity.
b. Promotion of the arts and cultural events.
c. Construction, maintenance, and operation of facilities for civic and cultural activities including construction and maintenance of access and other nearby roads and utilities for the facilities.
d. The criminal justice system, law enforcement, fire protection, solid waste collection, and health facilities when required to serve tourists and tourist facilities. This is based on the estimated percentage of costs directly attributed to tourists.
e. Public facilities such as restrooms, dressing rooms, parks, and parking lots.
f. Tourist shuttle transportation.
g. Control and repair of waterfront erosion.
h. Operating visitor information centers.

Projects may occur or begin in the 2018 calendar year.
For most award recipients, funding is provided for events or projects that will be completed during the calendar year following award by County Council.
Funding may also be provided to organizations that operate and keep their books on a fiscal year that begins during the calendar year following award by County Council; however, only eligible costs that will be incurred during that fiscal year will be considered for award.
Applicants may indicate the following categories on the application form:
-Not-for-Profit organization registered with the Secretary of South Carolina
-Eleemosynary organization established under IRS Code 501(c) 3,4,5,6,7,10
-Other Not-for-Profit organization
-Government or governmental agency
Due to time restrictions placed on use of ATAX funds, proposed events or projects must be “ready-to-go” if funding is awarded. Speculative events or projects, where other funding sources have not been identified, are not looked upon favorably.
The ATAX Advisory Committee strongly encourages applicants to also seek other funding sources and to develop diversified financial support.
The application deadline is October 6, 2017.
Funding generally is provided to award recipients, upon request, in advance of their event or project; however, funds should not be requested more than thirty (30) days prior to when they are actually needed for expenditure.
The Accommodations Tax Advisory Committee will meet on November 9, 2017, 9:00 AM in Council Chambers in the Old Georgetown County Courthouse located at 129 Screven Street. All applicants should be present to verbally present their grant applications to the Committee.
The Accommodations Tax Advisory Committee will meet on November 16, 2017, 9:00 AM in Council Chambers in the Old Georgetown County Courthouse located at 129 Screven Street. The Committee will develop a list of grant awards recommendations that will be presented to County Council. All applicants should be present at this meeting to respond to questions from the Committee.
In some cases, funds may be awarded only on a reimbursement basis. Such a stipulation will be at the discretion of the ATAX Advisory Committee and County Council based on the facts and circumstances of the particular applicant and event or project proposed.
