Grants to New York nonprofit and for-profit organizations, government agencies, secondary school districts, and IHEs for watershed stewardship projects in eligible locations. For-profit applicants may only apply for research, assessment, and monitoring grants. Eligible categories include education; planning; research, assess­ment, and monitoring; flood haz­ard mitigation; stream-related public infra­struc­ture improve­ments; and stream restora­tion. Projects can only be funded in towns within the Ashokan Reser­voir Water­shed that have adopted stream management plans.

The Ashokan Water­shed Stream Man­age­ment Pro­gram (AWSMP) pro­vides fund­ing for com­mu­nity part­ners to imple­ment rec­om­men­da­tions iden­ti­fied in the AWSMP Action Plan below and in the Stream Man­age­ment Plan for the water­shed.

Eligible projects relate to:

  • Improving water quality and enhancing stream stability
  • Protecting or improving stream-related infrastructure
  • Enhancing stream access and recreation
  • Planning and analysis for flood hazard mitigation
  • Increasing knowledge, skills and information in the community about stream stewardship
  • Protecting and enhancing aquatic and riparian habitat and ecosystems

Requested funds may be used for expenses directly related to the proposed project, including wages and consultant fees.

Estimated Size of Grant:

The maximum award for education projects is $35,000. There is no maximum or minimum award for projects in other categories.

Term of Contract:

Funded projects generally run from one to two years. Funding will be considered for early phases of a multi-phase project.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

Eli­gi­ble appli­cants include local, county, state, or fed­eral gov­ern­ment agen­cies, 501(c)(3) orga­ni­za­tions, sec­ondary school dis­tricts, col­leges or uni­ver­si­ties. For-profit firms or insti­tu­tions may sub­mit fund­ing appli­ca­tions in the Research, Assess­ment and Mon­i­tor­ing cat­e­gory only.

Please note: Replacement or repair of failing infrastructure due to age or decay is not eligible for funding. Only the por­tion of costs asso­ci­ated with the enlarge­ment or improve­ment of struc­tures to meet stream management objec­tives is eli­gi­ble for funding.

Pre-Application Information:

The deadline for submission of applications is Wednesday, October 13, 2021.

Applicants submitting infrastructure or stream restoration projects are encouraged to schedule a project review with AWSMP staff before applying.

Use of match from in-kind or other funding sources is not required but is encouraged to demonstrate how AWSMP funds will be leveraged.
