Grant Description
Grants of up to $1,000 and grants of up to $5,000 to Ontario individuals, groups, and community organizations to develop and strengthen arts and culture in eligible locations. Funding may be used for a range of artistic projects in the following disciplines: performing arts, visual arts, communications media, heritage, festivals and events, literary arts, electronic arts, crafts, design arts, and cultural heritage. Funding is intended to support artists and foster a vibrant and diverse arts community. Applications are open to all Newmarket residents, or those involved in Newmarket-based events.

There are three grant categories:

  • Youth - Offers funding towards fees associated with arts or crafts courses or lessons and/or towards the required materials and supplies or instrument required for courses or lessons.
  • Post Secondary - Offers funding towards fees associated with courses and other related program expenses required to complete the undergraduate program that the applicant is currently enrolled in.
  • Project & Events - Offers funding for the creation, production, presentation and distribution of arts and art services.

Applications for Projects/Events grants may have a heritage or cultural component, but the primary focus must encompass one or more of the below arts or crafts categories. Similarly, applications for the Post-Secondary or Youth grants should embrace at least one of the arts or crafts categories:

  1. Performing Arts: Folk Music, Non-Classical & New Music, Spoken Word Theatre, Classical Music, Musical Theatre & Opera, Dance & Mime, Circus & Magic
  2. Visual Arts: Printmaking, Photography, Performance Art, Sculpture & Installation, Painting& Drawing, Conceptual & Interdisciplinary
  3. Communications Media: TV Broadcasting, Webcasting & Blogging, Radio Broadcasting
  4. Heritage: Material Heritage, Built Heritage, Natural Heritage, Folkloric Arts
  5. Festivals & Events: related to arts & culture
  6. Literary Arts: Poetry, Non-Fiction, Storytelling, Publishing & Media, Fiction
  7. Electronic Arts: Video, Film, New Media, Digital & Animation, Audio
  8. Crafts: Wood, Stone, Metal, Textiles & Fabric, Mixed Media, Glass, Ceramics
  9. Design Arts: Industrial Design, Graphics
  10. Cultural Heritage: Performing Arts, Visual Arts, Heritage, Festivals & Events, Literary Arts, Electronic Arts, Crafts

Additional Eligibility Criteria
Youth Grants Eligibility:
-Newmarket resident 17 years of age or younger
-Demonstrated need
-Demonstrated potential
-Must have a primary arts focus

Post-Secondary Education Grants Eligibility:
-Newmarket resident 25 years old or younger
-Demonstrated need
-Registered in an undergraduate program at a post-secondary institution (including professional training school, university or college) with an arts focus and intends to pursue a career in one of the following disciplines: performing arts, visual arts, communications media, literary arts, electronic arts, civic arts, crafts or design arts

Projects/Events Grants Eligibility:
-Newmarket resident or collective
-Project must be Newmarket-based
-Demonstrated need
-Must benefit the Newmarket community
-Must have a primary arts focus
-Project/event cannot take place before application deadline
-Project/event has not received funding from NCA in the previous two consecutive years

Demonstrated need: Please note that grant eligibility for both the Youth and Post-Secondary Education grants is based not only on merit, but also on financial need.

Ineligibility Criteria - Grants cannot be used to fund the following:
-Donation to another cause
-Travel or accommodations
-Uniforms
-Personal equipment
-Banquets/trophies/prizes
-Expenses relating to capital projects
-Fundraising activities
-For-profit business initiatives
-Staff/Organizer salaries
-Project/Event that has received funding in the two previous consecutive years
-The grant program will not fund either a Master’s Degree or a Ph.D.

Pre-Application Information
Deadline: Monday, May 4, 2020 at 4 p.m.

For 2020, a letter informing applicants whether or not a grant will be funded will be sent once decisions are finalized – most likely early July. Grant results are not given out by telephone or email, so please do not call or email for this information.

The Arts Grants Committee will assess all complete grant applications. The Committee will rank the applications using specific criteria, based on the questions in the Application Form, to determine who will receive funding.
