Request a Grant Writer

Award of $5,000 to a Minnesota artist living in one of several eligible counties to acknowledge outstanding contribution to the arts over a long period of time. The award will honor an artist who has demonstrated the finest quality of artistic work, and who has been recognized by his or her artistic peers. In recognizing these individuals publicly, the awards will raise the profile of the arts in their communities and throughout the SMAC region.

- This award can be received only once in a lifetime.
- The nominated artist must have resided in the SMAC region for at least one year.
- Current SMAC board members are not eligible to be nominated.
- Nominations will not be carried over from year to year. Previous nominees who did not receive the award must be re-nominated.

The SMAC region consists of the following 18 counties in Southwest Minnesota:
Big Stone, Chippewa, Cottonwood, Jackson, Kandiyohi, Lac qui Parle, Lincoln, Lyon, McLeod, Meeker, Murray, Nobles, Pipestone, Redwood, Renville, Rock, Swift, Yellow Medicine

Pre-proposal Conference:

SMAC is still organizing workshops and webinars for fiscal year 2021 (starting July 2020). Until then potential applicants can set up a time for a digital meeting during Virtual Grant Support “Open Office” Hours. These happen every second Tuesday of the month.

Email the SMAC office to setup a time to meet via phone or web conference anytime between 10 am to 2 pm for assistance with any grant-related questions. Group meetings can also be accommodated digitally. These monthly events are a chance to get some work done and possibly talk with others in the arts community. Receive one-on-one guidance in: finding the right program, learning how to apply, preparing work samples, preparing budgets for proposals and more. SMAC staff will be available to help with any questions related to applications, projects, final reports, or eligibility.

Pre-Application Information:

Nominations must be submitted online by April 15, 2020. SMAC Board action regarding the nominations will take place April 28, 2020.

Nominations may be made by any individual other than the nominee. Nominees will not be notified of their nomination unless they are chosen to receive the Prairie Star Award.
