Grants to Maryland nonprofit healthcare organizations for capacity-building initiatives in eligible locations. Applicants must view a training session and schedule a site visit prior to applying. Priority will be given to programs that respond to the Coronavirus (COVID-19) crisis, address health disparities, or focus on systems building. Eligible nonprofits are based in Montgomery County.

FY21 Grant Proposal Priority Areas:

  • Health and Wellness Response to COVID Pandemic:  Includes: Safety-net clinics, Behavioral Health Services, Dentistry, Vision, and Prescription Access, etc.
  • Social Determinants of Health to Address Disparate Health Outcomes: Includes: Food Security, Consolidated Distribution HUBs, Emergency Assistance Relief Programs, EDI Programs, and Place-Based Initiatives, etc.
  • Systems Building: Includes: Nonprofit Capacity Building, Equity in Leadership, Food Security, etc.
  • Healthcare Workforce Education (by invitation only)

Within the geographic and focus area, areas of priority include: 

  • Support behavioral health and wellness across the lifespan;
  • Expand the availability and access to comprehensive health and wellness services across the lifespan;
  • Support sustainable service delivery systems and safety-net services across the lifespan focused on direct health and wellness services & place-based initiatives
  • Support sustainable service delivery systems and safety-net services across the lifespan supporting systems-based approaches, knowledge and best practices, and collective impact models; and
  • Develop a culturally competent healthcare workforce.

HIF makes grants that:

  • Start or grow well-conceived programs/organizations;
  • Offer innovative solutions to improve the quality, accessibility and/or delivery of healthcare;
  • Replicate successful (evidence based) programs from its own or other jurisdictions;
  • Serve HIF’s strategic priority areas and populations (e.g. aging, youth of opportunity; people of color, etc.);
  • Build organizational capacity to enhance sustainability and/or improve service delivery (e.g. planning, management, finance; fundraising, communications, etc.); and
  • Leverage resources, whether human or financial (e.g. revenue, partnerships, matching or aligned funds).

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

The Healthcare Initiative Foundation considers grants to 501(c)(3) healthcare nonprofits that are based in Montgomery County, Maryland, or to nonprofits that have county-based health programs or activities.

The Funding Source Will Not:

- Give to endowment funds or annual campaigns;
- Fund lobbying or political activities;
- Make grants to individuals;
- Provide funds to private foundations unless for a particular grant purpose;
- Fund a non-profit system or organization, including its affiliate(s) that owns or operates an acute care hospital in Montgomery County, Maryland;
- Provide funds to cover brick and mortar capital expenses;
- Replace government funding; or
- Fund religious activities, although secular health programs provided by a religious institution or its affiliate(s) may qualify.

Pre-proposal Conference:

All organizations interested in receiving grant funds from HIF in FY21 (July 1, 2020 – June 30, 2021) must attend a training. Training opportunities will be available virtually or will be recorded for interested partners.

Pre-Application Information:

The FY21 grant portal will open November 16, 2020 at 12pm EST. The grant portal will close December 18th, 2020 at 12pm EST. All applications must be submitted by this time to be considered for funding.

During grant application period, organizations that have not had a previous site visit should contact Jess Fuchs to schedule a site visit. If you have had a site visit and would like another visit, this is welcomed during this period as well.
