Grants to Illinois nonprofit organizations, government agencies, and IHEs for collaborative initiatives in conservation planning. Applicants must contact program staff prior to applying. Consideration will be given to public and private collaborations that identify significant wildlife habitat and natural areas and develop shared priorities among land conservation partners to help protect them.

Planning projects often result in future applications to the Foundation’s Land Acquisition grant program. Successful project teams include work to connect with other funding sources and supporters during the planning project.

-Identify and map acquisition priorities and divide responsibilities among land protection partners within a specific region of the state
-Develop strategies for achieving specific land acquisition objectives as part of a larger resource improvement effort (i.e. watershed improvement plans)

-Develop brand new plans or plans that otherwise identify conservation priorities in areas of the state where such collaborative maps and related planning activities do not currently exist
-Involve users who are committed to taking action as a result of the plan
-Proposal budget and work plan demonstrates collaboration
-Designed to lead directly to on-the-ground transactions to acquire and protect key natural areas in near future as opposed to being several steps removed from specific results

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

Individual organizations serve as the grant applicant/recipient but the projects are carried out by a team of organizations, often involving both public agencies and private conservation groups.

ALL applicants (nonprofits and local government agencies) are required to provide a Federal Employer Tax ID/Employer Tax ID Number (FEIN/EIN).

The majority of grantees under this program are 501(c)(3) organizations. If you are from a local government agency or a college or university and you have an idea for a planning project that would lead to the increased acquisition and protection of Illinois native wildlife habitat, please call the Foundation before submitting an application.

The Foundation gives grants to update projects with prior existing plans only if the proposed planning activities leads to new on-the-ground transactions and acquisition of key natural areas that would not otherwise have occurred under the existing plan and/or map.

The Foundation does not consider requests for campaigns to raise capital funds for land acquisition.

The Foundation does not give Planning for Acquisition grants to individual planning projects (i.e. those conducted by a single organization as opposed to a larger project team).

The Foundation does not provide support for public education activities or campaigns related to land acquisition planning efforts.

Pre-Application Information:

Eligible applicants should contact the Foundation before applying to describe the project goals and funding needs.

-February 22, 2018
-August 28, 2018

A confirmation email is sent after an application is received.

Applicants will be notified of the Foundation's decision on grant requests approximately three months after receipt of applications.

The Foundation’s grant will rarely cover the full cost of the work proposed. Grant requests from applicants organizations with additional funds from other sources will be more competitive.
