Description:

Request a Grant Writer

Grants to Illinois nonprofit organizations, government agencies, and IHEs for collaborative initiatives in conservation planning. Applicants must contact program staff prior to applying. Consideration will be given to public and private collaborations that identify significant wildlife habitats and natural areas and develop shared priorities among land conservation partners to help protect them.

The Planning for Acquisition Funding Category is designed to support planning projects that have the participation and support of multiple public and private land protection agencies and conservation groups. In considering grant requests under this Funding Category, the Foundation looks for proposals that include the involvement and commitment of a group of “customers” of the plan who are equipped to implement the plan. Successful proposals demonstrate that the planning project will not only develop a land protection vision for a shared region of focus, but is likely to lead to on-the-ground acquisitions in the near-term future.

Successful project teams include work to connect with other funding sources and supporters during the planning project.

Projects:
  • Identify and map acquisition priorities and divide responsibilities among land protection partners within a specific region of the state
  • Develop strategies for achieving specific land acquisition objectives as part of a larger resource improvement effort (i.e. watershed improvement plans)

Criteria:

  • Develop new plans that identify conservation priorities where collaborative activities do not currently exist
  • Involve users who are committed to taking action as a result of the plan
  • Proposal budget and work plan demonstrates collaboration
  • Planning activities are designed to lead to immediate transactions resulting in the protection of key natural areas

The Foundation provides support to update existing plans if the applicant can provide evidence that the proposed updates have the potential to impact the way the partner organizations implement their land protection programs. In other words, the proposed planning activities should lead to new on-the-ground transactions and acquisition of key natural areas that would not otherwise have occurred under the existing plan and/or map. The Foundation prefers to reserve its Planning for Acquisition grants for projects to develop new plans or conduct new work that helps to identify conservation priorities in areas of the state where such collaborative plans and maps and related planning activities do not currently exist.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

Eligible applicants are 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations.

Individual organizations serve as the grant applicant/recipient but the projects are carried out by a team of organizations, often involving both public agencies and private conservation groups.

All applicants (nonprofits and local government agencies) are required to provide a Federal Employer Tax ID/Employer Tax ID Number (FEIN/EIN).

The majority of grantees under this program are 501(c)(3) organizations. If you are from a local government agency or a college or university and you have an idea for a planning project that would lead to the increased acquisition and protection of Illinois native wildlife habitat, please call the Foundation before submitting an application.

Fledgling not-for-profit land trusts may be eligible for a limited amount of support for individual land acquisition planning under the Foundation’s Capacity Building Funding Category if such efforts are part of a larger project to build the land trust’s capacity for purchasing and protecting land in its focus area.

The Foundation does not provide support for public education activities or campaigns related to land acquisition planning efforts. Neither does the Foundation consider requests for campaigns to raise capital funds for land acquisition.
