Grant Description
Grants of $2,000 to Massachusetts nonprofit organizations, public institutions of higher education, and government agencies to preserve and enhance historic, cultural, and natural resources in eligible locations. Funding is intended for projects and activities within the focus areas of education, interpretation, access and inclusion, and preservation. All projects must occur within the geographic boundaries of the Essex National Heritage Area.

The Essex Heritage Partnership Grant Program is a reimbursable, matching grant program created to foster and support the stewardship activities of municipalities and organizations that share Essex Heritage’s mission to preserve and enhance the historic, cultural, and natural resources of the Essex National Heritage Area (Essex County).

Grants are available in four categories:

  • Education: Create or further develop educational opportunities for youth. 
  • Interpretation: Increase awareness and understanding of the region's heritage. 
  • Preservation: Preserve or enhance historic structures, landscapes, or cultural resources. 
  • Access and Inclusion: Provide accessibility accommodations for programming such as hiring Interpreters or using audio or visual aids, or make programming available to those who otherwise may not be able to experience them.

Additional Eligibility Criteria
Qualified applicants must be:
- Public entity (municipality, state government, or public institution of higher learning), or a
- Non-profit organization as evidenced by IRS non-profit determination letter [501(c)(3) only].

Ineligible
Applicants:
- Must NOT apply more than once in the same grant cycle
- May NOT apply if they received a 2022 Partnership Grant
- May NOT apply if they have an open or uncompleted Partnership Grant

Essex Heritage Partnership Grant funds may not be used for organizational operating costs or to purchase an interest in real property.

Pre-Application Information
Timeline:
- Application Deadline: February 24, 2023 (by 11:59 PM)
- February 25 - March 10, 2023: Applications reviewed by Essex Heritage Grant Review Committee.
- March 14, 2023: Essex Heritage notifies all applicants.
- March 15 – April 7, 2023: Essex Heritage collects images for presentation in April
- April 2023: Essex Heritage announces grant winners at the Spring Annual Meeting.
- May and June 2023: Grant contracts prepared and distributed, signed and returned.
- July 1, 2023: Projects begin from this day on.
- June 30, 2024: Final report and financial documentation due to Essex Heritage.

Partnership grants are MATCHING grants and require that proponents provide a minimum of 50% of the total project cost. All matching funds must be applied to the project after the date of contract signature by the grant recipient and between July 1, 2023, and June 30, 2024.
