Grants to North Carolina nonprofit organizations and public agencies in eligible areas to enhance the quality of life for local residents. Funding is intended for programming and general organizational support. Projects and activities can benefit a single organization, a collaborative initiative, or a system of services that addresses community issues. Eligible programs benefit Gaston County communities.

The Grants Committee and Board give strongest positive consideration to requests that demonstrate “grass roots” community support with a plan for utilizing resources and talents of both the sponsoring organization’s members and the population that would be helped by the requested grant.

The Grants Committee and Board of Directors give priority consideration to:

  • Organizations with a track record of success and realistic potential for measurable positive results from the requested grant. For new organizations, demonstrated leadership and careful planning/budgeting will be essential.
  • Projects that are innovative and do not unnecessarily duplicate other efforts
  • Projects that will supplement and support full use of the talents and resources already available from both the sponsoring organization’s members and the population which would be helped
  • Capacity building projects that will enhance the internal stability and growth of a receiving organization
  • Projects likely to attract support from matching fund arrangements
  • Projects with a plan for continued funding from other sources

The Grants Committee and Board of Directors are inclined to favorably consider:

  • Projects that are collaborative in nature, involving more than one organization
  • Projects that affect broad segments of the community
  • Projects that demonstrate good planning in light of overall community needs
  • Projects for which partial funding is required rather than total funding by the Foundation
  • Projects with appropriate measurement and evaluation tools in place
  • Projects that promote volunteer participation

Term of Contract:

The Foundation does not generally consider multi-year grants.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

Grants go only to tax-exempt public agencies or charitable organizations with 501(c)(3) status. The Foundation requires verification of a potential grantee’s tax-exempt status and the organization’s policy of non-discrimination.

Grants are made only to organizations and programs operating in Gaston County or primarily for the benefit of Gaston County citizens.

The Foundation does not consider grants to private schools, churches or other religious organizations unless the Foundation Board feels the applicant can demonstrate a clear and substantial benefit to the community as a whole as opposed to the applying organization.

The Foundation has historically declined grants for capital projects for the benefit of individual public schools. Grant requests made by the Gaston County School System for programs delivered in the public schools are best presented for consideration as collaboration among more than one school which benefits multiple schools. Grants to 501(c)3 organizations for programs which are delivered broadly to local schools are evaluated on a case-by-case basis as to their merits and community impact.

The Grants Committee and Board of Directors do not generally provide funding for:
- Annual fund campaigns
- Grants solely requesting operational expense
- Multi-year grants
- Recurring requests from a grantee for the same purpose for which a Foundation grant has been previously awarded
- Fundraising events, celebrations or dinners
- Individual schools unless the proposed project is district or county wide
- Individual schools, churches or other religious organizations unless the Foundations feels the applicant can demonstrate a clear and substantial benefit to the community as a whole as opposed to the applying organization

The Grants Committee and Board of Directors does not provide funding for:
- Lobbying activities, political organizations, or candidates for public offices
- Individual projects
- Religious organizations for sectarian purposes
- Research that is of a non-community nature or that does not have promise of near term benefits to the citizens of Gaston County
- Debt reductions, deficits, or previous obligations
- Retroactive expenses/activities
