Awards of $5,000 to USA health and mental health organizations to recognize outstanding efforts to improve the quality of mental health care for minorities. The purpose of the award program is to acknowledge excellence and innovation in the field of minority mental health services.

The Awards for Advancing Minority Mental Health were established in 2003 by the American Psychiatric Association Foundation (APAF) to recognize community organizations that have undertaken innovative and supportive efforts to:

  • Raise awareness in underserved minority communities about mental illness including the need for early recognition, access to and the availability of treatment, and the cultural barriers to treatment.
  • Increase access to quality mental health services for underserved minorities.
  • Improve the quality of care for underserved minorities, particularly those in the public health system or with severe mental illness.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

Mental health and wellness organizations are welcome to apply, as well as programs which:

- Raise awareness of mental illness in under-served minority communities, the need for early recognition, the availability of treatment and how to access it, and the cultural barriers to treatment.
- Increase access to quality mental health services for under-served minority communities.
- Improve the quality of care for under-served minority populations, particularly those in the public health system or with severe mental illness.
- Have been operational for at least two (2) years.

Past award recipients are ineligible, unless applying for recognition of a new initiative, achievement, or program.

Pre-Application Information:

The 2022 application cycle is now open through March 1, 2022.

Applicants will be notified of decisions in late April. In addition, Award recipients will be recognized at an APAF event during the 2022 APA Annual Meeting (virtual environment).

Award recipients will receive an award check in the amount of $5,000, a plaque, and recognition in APA/APAF publications and websites.
