The Permanent Endowment Fund for Martha’s Vineyard Grant is a family of funds, each with its own name and purpose. The Foundation views Education as a component of all these focus areas. For instance, grants for Art Education are included in Arts, and Environmental Education Programs are included in Environment. Grants that support schools are included in Community.

Estimated Size of Grant:

Grants typically range from $1,000 to $5,000. Some grants are made for larger amounts but these are rare and, in most cases, reflect a specific fund’s aims or provisions.

Term of Contract:

Grants are awarded for periods of up to one year. In some cases, such as for a summer program, grants for programs of shorter duration may be considered.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

Any not-for-profit organization with Internal Revenue Service 501 (c) (3) status may apply for a grant from the Permanent Endowment. Local government agencies also may apply. The programs supported by the Foundation primarily serve Martha’s Vineyard and benefit the people of the community.

An off-island organization may submit a grant request if the services provided take place on the Island, are for the benefit of the people of Martha’s Vineyard and have a clear linkage to improving this community’s quality of life.

The Foundation supports organizations with a well-planned approach to issues and needs, a demonstrated base of support, capable leadership and the involvement of individuals with the skills necessary to carry out the work.

The Endowment will not consider grants for political purposes, religious causes or projects benefitting members of a specific church or religious denomination, agency endowments or for individuals, other than for scholarships or educational programs as determined by a fund’s special provisions.

Pre-Application Information:

All 2018 grant applications must be postmarked or received via email on or before September 16, 2018 at midnight.

The Foundation offers one grant cycle per year in the Fall.

Requests for funding outside of the Endowment’s annual grant cycle may be considered in an emergency. A letter outlining the need is required.

Organizations submitting complete requests for funding will be scheduled to meet with representatives of the Endowment’s Board for a 15 minute meeting. The purpose is to provide grant seekers the opportunity to describe their organization, discuss their proposal, amplify information provided in the written application and answer questions about the project. Sessions are informal and designed to provide a better understanding of a project’s goals, activities to be undertaken and anticipated impact on the community.

Organizations may apply as frequently as they wish. For organizations with multiple subsidiaries, each subsidiary is viewed independently for grant purposes allowing the parent organization to submit more than one grant application each cycle. Subsidiaries, however, are required to adhere to the same limitations on applications as other nonprofit organizations. For the subsidiaries of an organization to qualify for this allowance, they must serve different populations.
