Estimated Size of Grant:

In general, grants range in size from $1,000 to $6,000. Some grants are made for larger amounts but these are rare and, in most cases, reflect a specific fund’s aims or provisions.

Term of Contract:

In the case of programs, grants will be considered for periods of time lasting up to one year. In the case of equipment or projects, it is expected the funds will be used within a year.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

Not-for-profit organizations that are based on Martha’s Vineyard with an Internal Revenue Service 501 (c) (3) status may apply for a grant from the Permanent Endowment. Local government agencies also may apply. The programs that are supported serve Martha’s Vineyard and benefit the community.

An off-island organization may submit a grant request if the services provided take place on the Island, are for the benefit of the people of Martha’s Vineyard and have a clear linkage to improving this community’s quality of life.

The Endowment will not consider grants for political purposes, religious causes or projects benefiting members of a specific church or religious denomination, agency endowments or for individuals, other than for scholarships or educational programs as determined by a fund’s special provisions.

Pre-Application Information:

All 2019 grant applications must be submitted online by midnight September 22, 2019. You will receive an immediate notification on this web page upon successful submission of your application. You will also receive an email confirming receipt.

Requests for funding outside of the Endowment’s annual grant cycle may be considered in an emergency. A letter outlining the need is required.

Organizations may apply as frequently as they wish.

Organizations submitting completed requests for funding will be scheduled to meet with representatives of the Endowment’s Board of Directors. Typically, an organization’s Executive Director and/or Project Manager, as well as a representative of the Board, participate in these 15 minute meetings. The purpose is to provide grant seekers the opportunity to describe their organization, discuss their proposal, amplify information provided in the written application and answer questions about the project. Sessions are informal and designed to provide a better understanding of a project’s goals, activities to be undertaken and anticipated impact on the community. In some cases, additional information may be requested to help clarify a project.
