Grants to Massachusetts nonprofit organizations in eligible areas to meet the basic human needs of underserved residents. Grants are intended for general operating support or program and project expenses. Funding is intended to support programs in the focus areas of education; food, agriculture and nutrition; health; housing and shelter; and mental health. Eligible applicants serve residents of the following South Shore areas: Abington, Braintree, Bridgewater, Brockton, Carver, Cohasset, Duxbury, Hanover, Hanson, Hingham, Holbrook, Hull, Marshfield, Norwell, Pembroke, Plymouth, Quincy, Randolph, Rockland, Scituate, Weymouth and Whitman.

The Harold Brooks Foundation provides assistance to causes and organizations that help the largest possible number of residents of Massachusetts' South Shore communities, especially those that support the basic human needs of South Shore residents. The Foundation supports nonprofit organizations that have the greatest impact on improving the human condition and/or that provide the neediest South Shore residents with "tools" to help them restore their lives.
Focus area details:
  • Education. The Foundation supports educational programs for all ages, including but not limited to academic access; educational enrichment; and remedial programming for children, youth, adults, and senior citizens that focus on preparing individuals to achieve while in school and beyond.
  • Health/mental health. The Foundation supports programming that: (1) makes care possible or expands care in response to priority community health needs of residents of the South Shore, (2) improves access to care (especially basic services) for traditionally underserved individuals or (3) prepares individuals to be independent and to assist themselves.
  • Food, agriculture, & nutrition/housing & shelter. The Foundation is committed to serving the South Shore community by supporting organizations that meet the basic needs of all individuals. The Foundation's efforts are focused on (but not limited to) shelters, food programs and employment programs.

Multi-year (2-3 years maximum) requests are welcome.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

Support for endowment campaigns is not provided. Only 1 request will be accepted from an organization during a 12-month period.

Pre-Application Information:

The Harold Brooks Foundation has an annual deadline of April 1. Applicants for the April deadline will be notified of grant decisions before June 30.

Please submit online applications by 11:59 p.m. on the day of the foundation’s deadline date. If the deadline falls on a weekend or a federally recognized holiday, applications are due on the next business day by 11:59 p.m.

The trustee may also consider Harold Brooks Foundation applicants for funding before the Grace E. Brooks Trust. There is no separate application process for this trust.
