Grants of up to $10,000 to Manitoba periodicals that publish in print to support new fiction, non-fiction, and poetry, to develop contemporary literary criticism, and to encourage Manitoban writers. Funding is intended to increase the awareness of local literary arts and culture.
Proposals are welcome from literary arts and culture magazines that demonstrate the following:
Cultural Significance and Presence
- Role in the development of an increased awareness of Manitoba writing and the arts
- Emphasis on presentation and interpretation of writers’ and artists’ work
- Significance of the periodical within the industry generally
- Interest in the product as reflected in sales; the market size, potential and achieved
Literary Contribution
- Writing of high quality
- Level of commitment to Manitoban writers
- Interest in local creative work and development of local writers
- Ability to attract manuscripts of national importance
- Focus and priorities related to art forms and genres
Management and Planning
- Structure: scope of operation and procedures used to select contributors, size and role of staff, and role of publisher,
editorial board, and/or editor
- Editorial and business plan: strategies for achieving publishing goals, annual production plan and budget, methods for comparing plan to actual results
- Marketing and distribution plans: strategies, goals
Financial Accounting
- Financial statements prepared regularly and consistently
- Relationship between budget and actual experience
- Issue cost analysis
Program Effectiveness and Efficiency
- Evaluation of production and results
- Response to contributors and to audience indicators
- Use of human resources
- Comparison to stated editorial , business, and operations plans
