Award of $5,000 and awards of $1,000 to Ontario emerging IBPOC artists in eligible regions with at least two years of professional practice in any artistic discipline. Eligible disciplines include but are not limited to visual arts, literature, theater, music, and dance. These awards are intended to honor and recognize the achievements of IBPOC artists who are working towards becoming recognized professional artists while engaging with the community of Ottawa.

In 2021, the Emerging Artist Award was reimagined to focus solely on recognizing and supporting artists who identify as IBPOC. 

Evaluation criteria

  • The applicant is clearly recognized as an emerging professional artist.
  • The artistic merit of the applicant’s body of work, outside of basic training.
  • The applicant demonstrates involvement in Ottawa’s arts community.
  • The applicant demonstrates a commitment to further career development.

The recipient will receive a $5,000 award and two finalists will receive $1,000 awards.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

Applicants for this award must:
- Be a resident of the City of Ottawa, or resident of the host nation: Algonquins of Pikwakanagan First Nation or Kitigan Zibi Anishinabeg First Nation.
- Self identify as IBPOC (Indigenous, Black, and Persons of Colour).
- Nominate themselves or be nominated by an individual or group (please note that nominators may only endorse one applicant in each category per year).
- Be involved in Ottawa’s arts community and work as an artist that seeks payment for their work.
- Be recognized by artists working in the same artistic discipline, having presented, performed, or published their work publicly.
- Not have previously received this award.
- Not currently enrolled in full-time training (educational institution or artistic training).

For the purpose of this award, emerging artists are considered as:
- Having a body of work they feel reflects the accomplishments of an emerging artist.
- Having dedicated between two and eight years to their professional practice.
- Having received local or national exposure with limited, if any, global exposure (not limited to Ottawa and Canada).

Pre-Application Information:

Nominations open from December 6, 2021 to March 9, 2022.

Applications may be submitted in English and French.
