Grants to North Carolina fire departments and agencies for smoke alarm installation and education. Funding is intended to reduce the number of fire-related injuries and deaths through fire safety education and installation of smoke alarms in high fire risk areas.

High fire risk areas may include:

  • Large percentage of older mobile homes
  • Low-income residences with older adults or
  • Areas with a large number of older homes.

Estimated Size of Grant:

Approved grant recipients will receive 54 alarms with option to request more.

Term of Contract:

Smoke alarm installs and surveys must be completed within 6 months of receipt of alarms.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

NC fire departments reporting through NFRIS are eligible to apply.

NC Agencies that have been trained to install alarms are eligible to apply.

Using local data, fire departments should locate high fire risk areas in their communities to provide education and long-life smoke alarms.

Grant application is open each year from January 1-31.
