Grants of up to $3,000 to New York nonprofit organizations in eligible areas for capacity building and community programming. Applicants are required to submit a letter of intent before applying. Funding is intended for professional development, programming, and to improve office operations. Organizations must be located in Ulster County.

Funding Focus: 

The Foundation will focus its grantmaking on applications that address the following funding priorities:

  • Build the capacity of organizations and the community, including but not limited to:
    • Equipment to improve office operations.  Shipping expenses are not included.
    • Professional development for staff and/or board members. Travel and lodging are not provided.
  • Support of programmatic areas.

Estimated Size of Grant:

Grants made through this program will not exceed $3,000. Awards range from $1,000-$2000.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

The following organizations are eligible to apply for grants:
-Tax exempt organizations located in Ulster County, New York
-Tax exempt organizations providing services to residents of Ulster County, New York (the organization must be able to document the number of residents in Ulster County being served)

Please note that grants are not given to support:
-Debt reduction
-General Operating Expenses
-Underwriting of special events
-Fundraising campaigns, such as endowment, capital or annual campaigns
-Projects related to partisan politics or elections
-Schools – However, grants may be made to support student/teacher community service programs targeted to assist community needs or for professional development opportunities at schools targeting disadvantaged populations
-Religious organizations. However grants may be made to support non-religious programs provided through these institutions
-Expenses that have occurred prior to the expected announcement dates of the grant awards

Pre-Application Information:

-Due to the increased volume of the Community Grants, the Community Foundations will be accepting online Letters of Inquiry (LOI) in our grants portal from July 1st through August 15th.
-Following a review of the LOIs, organizations may be invited to submit a full proposal to the Foundations by October 1st.
-Awards announced in December.
