Award with a $3,000 honorarium to a USA, Canada, or International individual health professional who has made significant contributions in the area of diabetes education. The award winner will have demonstrated long-term, significant contributions to the field of diabetes education on the national or international level, have many years of effort in the field of diabetes education, and will have evidence of benefit to recipients.
Additionally, the nominee should be well-known to others in his or her area of expertise. Publications and teaching experience are factors in the selection process. Contributions and volunteer service to both national and international diabetes organizations and the broader diabetes community may also be taken into consideration.
The recipient will deliver the Outstanding Educator in Diabetes Award Lecture at the 78th Scientific Sessions in Orlando, Florida (on June 22-26, 2018). Additionally, the recipient will be offered the opportunity to publish the lecture in an American Diabetes Association scientific journal.

The recipient receives a $3,000 honorarium. The award also includes two round-trip coach airfares and hotel accommodations for up to 5-nights, as well as other travel related expenses. The recipient will also be awarded two complimentary registrations to Scientific Sessions for recipient and guest.
Both USA and non-USA residents are eligible for the award.

Eligibility for awards is limited to those who have not received any other Association National Scientific Achievement Award during the preceding three years.
Nominees may not be current national officers of the American Diabetes Association or have held a national office within the past three years.
2018 Nomination/Submission Process:
- 2018 Nominations must be submitted using the electronic nomination form. All submissions must be received on or before 8pm ET, September 15, 2017.
- Nominations are accepted from any professional member of the American Diabetes Association.
All Outstanding Educator nominations must have the following documents uploaded as one .pdf file:
-Letter of nomination (no more than 400 words), signed by no more than 3 individuals, will be accepted. Letter of nomination should address criteria for selection.
-Nominee’s CV with career and publication highlights.
Selection and Presentation of Award:
- The recipient is chosen by the Medicine, Science, and Health Care Awards Committee and approved by the Executive Committee of the American Diabetes Association, February 2018
- The award will be presented at the 78th Scientific Sessions, June 22-26, 2018 in Orlando, Florida.
