Foundation / Corporation
Grants of up to $15,000 to Greater Philadelphia area, Pennsylvania nonprofit organizations for social change initiatives that will benefit underserved women and girls. Informational calls will be held on May 10 and 23, 2017. Letters of intent are due June 30, 2017. Applicants may have a national impact with a local connection to the greater Philadelphia area.
Grants are given in accordance with specific Social Change Indicators developed by the Women’s Funding Network (for more information, see Supporting Documents). Programs that solely provide direct service to women and girls, but do not result in meaningful social change, fall outside the Valentine Foundation mission and will not be funded, since they do not meet the social change criteria.
Grant applicants have to demonstrate how their organization, or the program or project for which they are requesting a grant, will contribute to social change for women and girls through one (or more) of these Indicators of Social Change:
1) Shift in Definitions: The issue is defined differently in the community or society.
2) Shift in Engagement: People in the community or larger society are more engaged.
3) Shift in Policies: An institutional, organizational or legislative policy or practice has changed.
4) Current Position Maintained: Past gains have been maintained (in the face of backlash or resistance).

The deadline for submitting a Letter of Intent is June 30, 2017. In October, the Trustees convene for a two-day meeting to discuss each of the proposals identified for possible funding. The organizations that are selected at this stage of the process will be contacted by a Trustee, given feedback about the request and invited to submit a full proposal by November 3, 2017. The Trustees meet again in November to review the detailed proposals and make the final grant allocations. The grants are mailed by the end of November.
