Awards to USA and Canada middle and high schools to recognize innovative science education programs for students in grades 6-12. The purpose of this program is to support outstanding approaches in science lab instruction that utilize limited laboratory and school resources. This program also seeks to raise awareness and exposure of the outstanding work being done in the science education field.

The Shell Science Lab Challenge will showcase the work of teachers, representing their schools, who submit innovative, replicable strategies to deliver quality lab experiences with limited equipment/resources, and award teachers/schools with additional tools, resources, and rich professional development opportunities needed to support high-quality science teaching and strengthen their existing capabilities.

To be eligible for consideration, all work must be current and cumulative as applicable.

Applicants must demonstrate:
-Innovative science inquiry in the classroom with limited laboratory equipment, materials, and resources
-Impact and engagement with students
-Need for support
-Use of state and/or national standards
-Use of safety practices

Number of Grants:

There will be one Grant Prize Winning school; 4 National Finalist schools; and 18 District Winning schools.

Estimated Size of Grant:

Each District Winner school wins a $3,000 science lab prize package that includes:
-Designation as an "NSTA/Shell Science Lab Challenge District Winner," school banner;
-$1,000 Shell Science Lab grant;
-$1,000 gift certificate outfitted by Carolina Biological Supply Company, to purchase science/lab equipment and science education resource books through their company;
-$300 gift certificate to the NSTA Bookstore;
-One year NSTA membership for two teachers;
-NSTA Learning Center subscription for two teachers; and
-Paid registration for up to two teachers (if a team application) to attend an NSTA Area Conference on Science Education.

The top four National Finalist schools receives a science lab prize package (total: $8,500) that includes:
-Designation as an "NSTA/Shell Science Lab Challenge National Finalist," school banner, and citation;
-$300 gift certificate to the NSTA Bookstore;
-One year NSTA membership for two teachers;
-Registration for up to two teachers to attend the national conference on science education;
-Recognition and attendance at the Shell Reception and Teacher Awards Gala at the national conference on science education;
-NSTA Learning Center subscription for two teachers;
-$3,000 Shell Science Lab grant, to purchase science/lab equipment and science education resources;
-$3,000 gift certificate outfitted by Carolina Biological Supply Company, to purchase science/lab equipment and science education resource books through their company; and
-Expense-paid trip for one teacher (or two if a team application) to attend the NSTA National Conference on Science Education.

The Grand Prize Winner school receives a science lab prize package (total: $20,000) that includes:
-Designation as an "NSTA/Shell Science Lab Challenge Grand Prize Winner," school banner, and citation;
-$300 gift certificate to the NSTA Bookstore;
-One year NSTA membership for two teachers;
-Registration for up to two teachers to attend the national conference on science education;
-Recognition and attendance at the Shell Reception and Teacher Awards Gala at the national conference on science education;
-NSTA Learning Center subscription for two teachers;
-$5,000 Shell Science Lab grant to purchase science/lab equipment and science education resources;
-$5,000 gift certificate outfitted by Carolina Biological Supply Company, to purchase science/lab equipment and science education resource books through their company; and
-Expense-paid trip for a second teacher from the school to attend the NSTA National Conference on Science Education

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

Eligibility:
-Applicants may be individual teachers or teams of teachers of science in grades 6-12, in the United States and Canada, representing their schools.
-A teacher is limited to one application per year (whether submitting as an individual or team applicant).
-A school may submit an unlimited number of applications.

Pre-proposal Conference:

Applicants are invited to register for web seminar to learn more about the Challenge.

The program will feature presenter Ruth Ruud, a past- and present chair of a number of awards and recognition committees and lead judge for the Shell Science Lab Challenge. Ms. Ruud will discuss the application process for 2017-18, share insight into completing your application, and provide tips for strengthening your submission for a chance to win one of 18 lab makeover and professional development support packages.

The web seminar is scheduled for Wednesday, October 25, 2017, 6:30 PM ET / 5:30 PM CT / 4:30 PM MT / 3:30 PM PT.

Pre-Application Information:

All entries must be received by 11:59 PM EST on 12/15/2017, via online submission. Entry fees are free.

The Shell Science Lab Challenge Judging Panel will review applications and select up to 54 district finalists (3 in each of 18 NSTA Districts).

District finalists will be asked to provide additional responses, including a 3-5 minute video (due January 2018) that displays the school’s current science laboratory facilities and provides further explanation of how winning equipment/resources would make a difference in the applicant’s science teaching and in the learning experience for students.

The Judging Panel will review the district finalist submissions and select 18 district winners.

The Shell Science Lab Challenge National Judging Panel subcommittee will select a Grand Prize Winner and four National Finalists from the pool of district winners.

The Shell Science Lab Challenge national winners will be honored during a black-tie dinner gala on 3/16/2018 in Atlanta, Georgia, at the NSTA National Conference on Science Education.
