Grants to New Hampshire nonprofit organizations and government agencies for projects that improve children's health throughout the State. Applicants must submit an LOI prior to submitting an application. Priority will be given to projects that focus on children up to five years of age, as well as their families. Eligible projects will focus on preventing childhood obesity, promoting oral health, and reducing food insecurity.

The focus areas for responsive grantmaking are to:

  • Prevent childhood obesity
    • Priority: To enhance places to be active and increase the consumption of healthy food for children up to age 5.
    • Strategies:
      • Support for establishing and sustaining coalitions or partnerships that result in communities with increased access to healthy food and enhanced places for physical activity, for NH children up to age 5 and their families.
      • Support for activities to establish local-level policies and practices to promote healthy eating and active living for children up to age 5 and their families.
      • Data collection, analysis, communication and advocacy to increase awareness of childhood obesity across New Hampshire for children up to age 5, and build support for state and local policies and practices to prevent childhood obesity.
  • Promote oral health
    • Priority: Promote oral health for children through age five and pregnant women.
    • Strategies:
      • Support the development of a system to train and certify public health dental hygienists.
      • Implement evidence-based oral health prevention education by primary care providers for children up to age 5, and reproductive-age women.
      • Data collection and analysis, communication and advocacy to increase access to oral health preventive care in children up to age 5, and reproductive-age women.
  • Reduce food insecurity
    • Priority: Reduce food insecurity by increasing opportunities for children and families to access affordable, healthy food.
    • Strategies:
      • Support for research-informed, emerging and promising practices to increase participation in federal nutrition and food assistance programs for children and families.
      • Support research-informed, emerging and promising practices to increase the availability of and access to affordable, culturally appropriate fresh and local foods for children and families at risk for food insecurity.
      • Data collection, analysis, communication and advocacy to increase awareness of food insecurity across NH and build public support for policies and practices that increase participation in federal nutrition programs and increase access to affordable, culturally appropriate, fresh and local foods for children and families at risk for food insecurity.

Estimated Size of Grant:

Single year awards range from $10,000 – $20,000/year. Multi-year awards, up to three years, are available for $20,000/year or a maximum of $60,000.

Term of Contract:

Applicants may submit a Letter of Inquiry for single year or multi-year funding. Multi-year funding is for up to three years.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

Who Can Apply:
- Tax-exempt organizations under any part of section 501(c) of the Internal Revenue Code
- State or local government agencies or a unit of government
- Grassroots organizations, collaboratives or coalitions may apply under the auspices of a tax-exempt fiscal sponsor (fiscal sponsorship information is gathered in the Letter of Inquiry phase)
Note: Applicant organizations must be in compliance with local, state, and federal regulations

Not Funded:
- Biomedical research
- Capital campaigns
- Expenses already incurred
- Fundraising events
- Out of state projects that do not benefit New Hampshire
- Sectarian or religious programs
- Support for political activities, i.e. lobbying
- International travel expenses
- Organizations or projects that discriminate based on age, sex, religion, race, color, creed, sexual orientation, physical or mental disability, national or ethnic origin

Multi-year funding is limited to pilot or pilot expansion projects that result in a policy, system, or environment change (PSE).

The foundation is no longer accepting proposals through the responsive grantmaking process for the following two priorities:
- Prevent and reduce childhood trauma
- Increase access to children’s health and dental insurance coverage

If seeking funding for more than one strategy within a grant cycle, the applicant must submit a separate Letter of Inquiry for each strategy.

Not all Letters of Inquiry result in an invitation to submit a full application.
