Grant Description

Grants of up to $5,000 to Illinois schools for programs that address children's nutrition and health. Funding is intended to cover costs incurred by school food programs for select equipment, materials, and initiatives. The goal of the program is to increase student participation in school breakfast programs. Eligible applicants are schools where 70% or more of the student population is eligible for free or reduced–price meals.

Suggested budget requests include, but are not limited to:

  • Equipment purchases: insulated bags and grab-and-go carts
  • Supplies: trash cans and bags
  • Technology: point of service machines

Approved Alternative Breakfast Delivery Models: 

  • Breakfast in the Classroom
  • Grab and Go to the Classroom, served at the start of the school day
  • Second Chance Breakfast, served grab-and-go style to the classroom.
  • Second Chance Breakfast, eaten in the cafeteria

Eligibility:
- Illinois schools with 70% or more of the student population eligible for free or reduced–price meals
-Applying schools must either be implementing or be prepared to implement a Breakfast After the Bell delivery model.
