Grants to Michigan organizations in eligible locations for public art projects and programs that benefit local residents. Funding is intended for activities that provide quality art experiences, encourage public participation and artistic expression, and promote cultural understanding and appreciation through art. Priority is given to proposals that focus on race, equity, gender, and disability and highlight BIPOC, LGBTQIA artists. Projects must take place within and primarily benefit residents of the City of East Lansing.


  • The project must encourage artistic awareness, public participation and/or cultural arts appreciation.
  • The project must provide evidence of artistic merit.

Estimated Size of Grant:

There is no minimum or maximum grant amount, however applicants are advised that the Commission is interested in supporting as many programs as possible over a wide range of genres. Grant amount requested cannot exceed 15% of project cost.

Term of Contract:

The project must take place between November 1, 2020 and June 30, 2021.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

-Grants are available to organizations.
-The grant cannot be used to pay salaries or benefits; however, an honorarium is acceptable.
-The Artist or Project Coordinator is not required to be a resident of the City of East Lansing.

-October 23: Application Deadline, 5:00 PM
-Oct 26 – Nov 6: Administrative Review of Applications
-November 19: Arts Commission Meeting to Review Applications, 5:30 PM
-November 25: Notification of Grant Awards
-December 1: Funds Released to Grantee Agencies
-July 30, 2021: Program Reports Due

Applications will be reviewed by the East Lansing Arts Commission on November 19, at 5:30 PM. Applicants will be given the opportunity to provide a 5 minute description of their project and to address any questions the Commission has.
