Grants to Michigan organizations in eligible locations for public art events and projects. Funding is intended for activities that provide quality art experiences, encourage public engagement, and promote cultural understanding and appreciation through art. Priority is given to proposals that focus on race, equity, gender, and disability and highlight BIPOC, LGBTQIA artists, and art performances. Projects must take place within and primarily benefit residents of the City of East Lansing.


  • The project must encourage artistic awareness, public participation and/or cultural arts appreciation.
  • The project must provide evidence of artistic merit.

Estimated Size of Grant:

There is no minimum or maximum grant amount; however, applicants are advised that the Commission is interested in supporting as many programs as possible over a wide range of genres. Applications that request no more than $500 or 15% of the total project cost, whichever is more, will be viewed favorably.

Term of Contract:

The project must take place between October 1, 2021 and June 30, 2022.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

- Grants are available to organizations.
- The grant cannot be used to pay salaries or benefits; however, a stipend is acceptable.
- The Artist or Project Coordinator is not required to be a resident of the City of East Lansing.

August 11: Grant presentation and Q&A via Zoom 11:30 a.m.

- September 1: Application deadline, 5:00 p.m.
- Sep 2 - 10: Administrative review of applications
- September 16: Arts Commission meeting to review applications, 5:30 PM
- September 22: Notification of grant awards
- October: Funds released to grantee agencies
- July 30, 2022: Program reports due

Applications will be reviewed by the East Lansing Arts Commission on September 16, at 5:30 p.m. Applicants will be given the opportunity to provide a 5-minute description of their project and to address any questions the Commission may have.
