Grants to Washington and Oregon nonprofit organizations and government entities to address community health and wellness needs in eligible regions. Funding is intended to benefit the community and to support volunteerism and community engagement. Project areas include mental health, health care equity, and economic opportunity. Eligible applicants are qualified charitable organizations to which Kaiser Permanente Northwest employees and clinicians donate their time. Grant request must be for a program within the Kaiser Permanente Northwest service area.

Counties within the Kaiser Permanente Northwest service area include:

  • Oregon state: Benton, Clackamas, Columbia, Hood River, Lane, Linn, Marion, Multnomah, Polk, Washington, Yamhill
  • Washington state: Clark, Cowlitz, Lewis, Skamania, Wahkiakum

In 2020, Community Health Needs Assessments (CHNA) focus areas are access to health care, economic opportunity, and mental health and wellness, including addiction/behavioral health. Additional parameters align with national strategies and include specific initiatives around social health, housing, schools, medical financial assistance, Medicaid, cities, and environmental stewardship.

  • Economic opportunity — The goal of this focus area is to support projects that increase individuals’ economic means to attain basic needs such as food, housing, utility assistance, and childcare to name a few. Projects should help youth and families to become self-sufficient; eliminate barriers that prevent self-sufficiency; and promote educational opportunities, transportation, mentoring, and workforce training and placement.
  • Access to care — The goal of this focus area is to create equitable and culturally-appropriate access to medical, dental, mental health, and vision care. Projects should focus on ways to increase use of needed health services by populations who typically are underserved.
  • Mental health — The goal of this focus area is to recognize the social and emotional challenges that individuals and communities are experiencing. Projects should focus on improving the mental health and resilience of our communities through trauma-sensitive systems of care and prevention efforts, addiction and behavioral health treatment programs, and the integration of physical and mental health care in clinical and community settings.

For more information on CHNA, see
