Grants of $12,000 to Maryland, Virginia, and Washington, DC nonprofit organizations in eligible locations for programs that promote literacy for women and children. Funding is intended to support new or existing literacy programs. Eligible applicants are located in the Washington, DC greater metropolitan area.

JLW continues to support programs that address at least one aspect of the JLW definition of literacy. JLW defines literacy as “an individual’s ability to read, write and speak […] and compute and problem solve at levels of proficiency necessary to: function on the job and in society, achieve one’s goals, and develop one’s knowledge and potential.” Additionally, funding must support a new, existing, or restructuring of a literacy program for women and/or children that develops:

  • Artistic or cultural literacy skills, including knowledge of history and social issues, performing or experiencing the arts, building creative expression or visual thinking skills;
  • Early childhood literacy skills through access to reading materials, tutoring and resources;
  • Job readiness skills, such as financial or digital competencies; and
  • Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) skills.

Estimated Size of Grant:

In 2020-2021, the Junior League of Washington will award Targeted Grants in the amount of $12,000.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

All organizations interested in a Junior League of Washington grant must:
- Be a 501(c)3 organization with a valid EIN number;
- Be located in the Washington, D.C. greater metropolitan area;
- Present a program in alignment with JLW’s mission, specifically “improving communities through […] effective action”;
- Address a clear unmet need with the organization and/or the community; and
- Demonstrate that JLW funds will have a significant financial impact.

At this time, winner(s) of a Targeted Grant in the prior award cycle are ineligible to apply for a Targeted Grant.
