Grants of $12,000 to Maryland, Virginia, and Washington, DC nonprofit organizations in eligible locations for programs that promote literacy for women and children. Funding is intended to support new or existing literacy programs. Eligible applicants are located in the Washington, DC greater metropolitan area.
JLW continues to support programs that address at least one aspect of the JLW definition of literacy. JLW defines literacy as “an individual’s ability to read, write and speak […] and compute and problem solve at levels of proficiency necessary to: function on the job and in society, achieve one’s goals, and develop one’s knowledge and potential.” Additionally, funding must support a new, existing, or restructuring of a literacy program for women and/or children that develops:
